Upon arriving, my first impression was the place looked dirty and grungy … sort of like the inside of a 1990s Pizza Hut.
You order your food at the counter instead of having a server. The menu was easy to read on the wall behind the register, and paper menus were available as well if you wanted to stand off to the side to think about what you wanted to order.
I ordered a 9” pepperoni & sausage (I was also told that their sausage crumbles are the best sausage of any pizza place). The 9” pizzas were almost all $9.50 for one topping and $0.75 per additional topping … so mine was $10.25, which was not horrible at all.
After ordering my pizza, I asked to order a drink, only to be informed that the register where you order pizza at only accepts payment for food, and if I wanted a drink I had to go down a bit to the beverage station. This wasn’t the end of the world, but it was more annoying than anything having do 2 separate transactions … just accept payment for nonalcoholic fountain drinks at your food counter.
I ordered a drink from the counter, they had options for fountain drinks or individual cans. It was $2.09 per 12oz can or 24oz fountain soda. I think a 12oz fountain soda was $1.09 .. so fair drink prices.
My pizza was ready in about 12-15 minutes, which wasn’t horrible. The staff announces your order number over the PA and then you go back to the counter to pick up your food; so you have to be paying attention.
I picked up my pizza as soon as my number was called. The pizza looked fantastic, I loved the way it was sliced, and I couldn’t wait to try it. Upon taking my first bite I noticed that the pizza was warm, but not hot like a typical pizza. Luckily I eat fast or my pizza would’ve been cold before finishing. I was not too thrilled about the overall temperature of the pizza.
Temperature aside, the pizza itself just wasn’t good. To me it tasted like an upgraded version of Totino’s frozen pizza. It was very bland and overall nothing special. I’d eat it again if it was available for free at an event of some sort because I love pizza, but I won’t be rushing back to purchase another pizza from them.
I did like the thin flaky crust (I’m normally not a big thin crust fan, but this was my favorite part of their pizza). The sauce had minimal flavor, the cheese was fine, was the pepperoni was normal, and the sausage was incredibly bland… it was just there hardly any flavor at all. It was also in the shape of ground beef/ground sausage. It wasn’t the sausage crumbles that I was thinking it would be.
Overall it was a big let down. Maybe they had a bad day, but I did not understand the hype or how Marion’s pizza got voted the best pizza in Dayton. There are definitely better options out there in Dayton/Cincinnati market.
It would have still been the worst pizza even without seeing all that go on, as our pizza was already in the old oven.
The 1st pizza was missing half the pizza as it stuck to the old oven, so they salvaged what they could even though it was not fully cooked and sent it out as “done”. We have always requested our pizzas be made in the “old oven”. We requested a 2nd one made again old oven, 2nd one fair at best being generous.
Hardly any sauce on the cheese side and the pepperoni was partly cooked even on the 2nd. Other pizzas were coming out looking like they should crispy, delicious and done. Definitely disappointing they did not hit the mark of quality and definitely can not replicate Shroyer Road Marions quality. Old Man Marion would have never sent that pizza out or the even allowed that quality. And, yes we paid for the pizza. #2179
As soon as I stepped in the door memories came flooding back, the smell of the pizza ovens, the massive pizza ovens… The old menu boards, the arcade, the drink coolers all lined up. The Orange Tree skylight and that 70’s style decor… I felt like I stepped back in time to when everything was right with the world.
The pizzas were great but the little grandkids couldn’t wait till 8 to eat so they are having theirs the following night.
They have a very open concept seating area,a small drink/bar,you can watch them make the pizzas and there’s even a small arcade! 🙂
We got a gluten-free all meat and a reg 9-inch pep, sasuage, mushroom and a chicken salad. It was the bomb!
I would highly recommend!
