The Band Skyclub was okay.
Summing it up the Pub is a hard 3.5 -average it out to a soft 4. Will I return? (if I have nothing better to do.)
The menu’s Western New York sensibilities will feel instantly familiar to anyone with roots in Buffalo or Rochester, which made it an especially welcome sight for my wife’s family, all originally from that region. The restaurant’s longtime server, who appears to have been part of the team since its early days, proved to be one of its strongest assets. Her command of the menu, ability to steer guests toward the right selections, and genuine hospitality set the tone for the afternoon.
Ambience at Mainstreet Pub is functional rather than transportive—straightforward, pub-appropriate, and comfortable, though not particularly noteworthy. But diners do not come here for aesthetic immersion. They come for the food, and on that front the kitchen more than delivers.
Across the table, every entrée arrived well-executed, but one item stood out with unmistakable authority: the Kummelweck sandwich. A proper Beef on Weck is something of a regional litmus test, and Mainstreet Pub’s version is exceptional. The beef is tender and deeply flavorful, the jus balanced, and the kummelweck roll perfectly salted and caraway-studded. As someone who is not a Buffalo native, I offer this praise without hometown bias: it is the best Beef on Weck I have tasted outside Western New York. Paired with a well-curated draft beer selection, it embodies exactly what a pub specialty should be—unpretentious, satisfying, and executed with pride.
In a dining landscape where many “pubs” lean heavily on ambience while delivering middling food, Mainstreet Pub reverses the equation. The culinary output is the reason to visit, and it is compelling enough to make the trip worthwhile. For travelers passing through Melbourne—or locals who have overlooked it—this is a lunch stop well worth seeking out.
Highly recommended.
As introverts, we don’t like crowded indoor bars. The front patio at Main Street was special to us; it was how we could get the “bar” experience and feel like part of the downtown vibe without being overwhelmed. It truly became our spot. We weren’t popular regulars who knew everyone; in fact, I’m so bad with names my wife had to help me remember “Shelby, like the Mustang.”
But we saw the same staff for ages, especially Shelby. She got to know us, maybe not by name, but by our drinks. She’d just walk up and say, “Orange crush and Cherry limade?” We loved that simple recognition. This bar was the main reason we’d come downtown, to the point where we would even get a hotel nearby just so we could enjoy our night at Main Street and not worry about driving.
This past Friday night, that all came to an end.
We sat down outside as we always do. It was unusually slow outside, but busy at the bar. We saw Shelby running around handling the inside tables. After about 10 minutes, I decided to go inside to try and make her life easier. My plan was to find her and say, “Hey, we’re at a table outside, just getting our usual drinks, no food, bring them whenever you get a second.”
I walked in and saw her, smiled, and said, “Hey Shelby!” She walked right past me without a glance. Weird, I thought, maybe I wasn’t loud enough. So I waited by her station. When she came back, I tried again: “Hey Shelby, are you working outside?” She curtly said, “yah” and walked right past me a second time. I leaned over and said, “We’re just gonna have drinks,” but she completely ignored me.
As I was standing there, confused by her behavior, the bartender barked at me, “what do you want?” I started to explain, “Hey, we were just gonna order drinks…” and he cut me off, loudly and aggressively asking, “Do you have a table?” When I said “yes,” he YELLED at me, “Then go sit down!”
I was completely dumbfounded. I’ve never been spoken to like that in any establishment, let alone one I’ve given thousands of dollars to over the years. I just turned and walked out.
By the time I got to the table, I was furious and told my wife what just happened. She was just as upset, and we agreed to leave immediately. On the way out, I went back in and told the bartender, “You have a real shitty attitude, and I wasn’t going to go sit down. We’re leaving because of your shitty attitude.”
His response was to yell “BYE” and wave mockingly at me as we walked out the door. The other woman working behind the bar heard the entire exchange and said absolutely nothing.
We were shaking. I am still in shock. We went from being loyal patrons who genuinely loved our quiet spot to being screamed at in a crowded bar to “go sit down” like a disobedient dog. We weren’t being impatient; I was literally trying to help the staff. All our good memories here, all the nights spent on that patio, have been shattered by the hostile, unprofessional behavior of that bartender and the cold shoulder from a waitress we thought we had a rapport with.
We will never be back.
Edit: Except to say MSP tried to get this post shadow banned!
5 Stars
Located in Historic Downtown Melbourne, in a building dating back to at least 1947, Main Street Pub opened in 2005 and they don’t appear to be leaving anytime soon. This is one of those places you pass a million times and never give it a second thought. I am so glad the name popped up for review, forcing me to stop. This place is truly a hole in the wall. But what a wonderful hole it is! The service manager explained that they slow roast a bottom round daily and slice to order.
I requested for one Pub Bleu Sandwich, and to appease those readers who insist that you will live longer avoiding red meat, I ordered one Tuna Salad Sandwich and a Caesar salad. Waiting for my grub, I enjoyed the history of the building I was in. Locals tell of a watering hole here in the 1800s; the actual location of this tale is just behind their Tiki Bar. Seriously cool if you’re a history geek. It wasn’t long before my chow was ready and after snapping a few pictures, I proceeded to the job at hand.
One bite of the Pub Bleu and I knew the service manager to speak true (there is a song in there somewhere). I have never had Bleu cheese this fresh outside of a salad and that roast beef? Holy Bessie on a Rotisserie spit! It was spectacular! The Kaiser roll was just as fresh and the accompanying Au jus was to die for. What a sammich!!
Forcing myself to stop at two bites as I had a job to do, not a maw to cram, I grabbed half of the Tuna Salad and took a healthy bite. This is outstanding. If they didn’t catch the tuna that morning, I don’t know their secret, but this had to be the freshest, tastiest tuna salad I have ever had grace my palate.
My final choice was the Caesar salad. This item, like everything else, was made to order. Not only was the dressing spot on but the croutons were made on-site, NOT from Sysco. These immediately took me back to high school and the salad bar in the Senior Cafe at Mel Hi. Remember those croutons? When I leave a place that knows they have done an excellent job, they always invite me back. I usually make some excuses about having to do so many reviews when there is no time; however, I will make an exception for this place. If I possessed the power of Advowson, I would point this cook the Head Chef of Melbourne pubs.
The Big Boy says, “Give ’em a try. This food is great. I will be back.
Absolutely fantastic experience! The food was delicious and full of flavor, the service was top-notch from start to finish, and the drinks were nothing short of amazing. The perfect spot for a great meal, great vibes, and a great night out. Highly recommend!
