Social Profile:

Pokez is a downtown San Diego Mexican restaurant featuring authentic flavors and classic dishes for vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. The Pokez menu offers a wide array of delicious plates, all of which are easily adjusted for vegetarian and vegan diners. Our chefs sauté up a succulent carne asada for California burritos, but they are equally good at searing a mean tofu for the tofu fajitas! We cook with vegetable oil, not lard, so our beans and rice are 100% vegetarian, low in fat and sodium. No MSG or artificial anything. We use the finest ingredients including organic produce when possible. First opened on March 16, 1994, Pokez has been a thriving staple of the downtown restaurant scene ever since.

Classic Mexican fare including tacos, enchiladas as well as all-day breakfast & vegetarian items.

Veggie-Vegan centric menu that’s so tasty! Many of the dishes mimic the beef or chicken versions that may not have the same texture yet flavorful. Extensive menu so we always try to pick something different and have never been disappointed. Always a stop when near downtown and craving Mexican fare.

I decided to come here for brunch on a Sunday so this was my first meal of the day. A few hours later I started feeling sick. I had a serious case of food poisoning that lasted 48 hours. I had their veggie burrito which came out immediately after I placed the order. It didn’t even take a full minute for the food to come out as if it had been sitting there, not fresh at all. The burrito consisted mostly of pinto beans, some rice and a tiny bit of tomatoes, lettuce & guac. Zero texture and tasteless. No seasoning. I only forced myself to eat it because I was hungry. For dessert I got their “chocolate German cake” which tasted nothing like a real German cake. I took 2-3 bites and threw the rest away. The restaurant has no AC. You order at the counter and then sit yourself. My table was wobbly. Server was ok. I highly advise skipping this place.

California Burrito Hunt – Stop #25

I am on a mission to find the best California Burrito in town. Today’s stop is Pokez Mexican Restaurant.

The Burrito:
The biggest strength of this burrito is the fresh ingredients, and you can really taste it. The grilled meat is flavorful, and the avocado with the sour cream sauce adds nice variety to each bite. They also add cabbage, which gives the dish and its flavor a unique twist. The potatoes, however, became a bit watery from the heat. If the potatoes had been crispy and the meat slightly more flavorful, this could easily be the best burrito in the city. They also make their own sauces here, which taste great and clearly come from fresh products — nothing old or stale. Price is $15 plus tax, which is slightly above the city average. Score: 7 out of 10

Service:
The man who helped me clearly did not want to interact. I would not call it rude, but it was definitely harsh and unwelcoming. Score: 1 out of 10

Atmosphere:
You can tell they have put effort into creating a certain atmosphere. The place is old, filled with vintage things, and there is so much to take in. I cannot even describe it all — you have to see the photos. Despite the age of the decor, the place is clean, which works surprisingly well with the antique feel. Score: 7 out of 10

It’s good but the serving sizes are massive, more than one could eat in a single sitting. The quesadilla was thiccc, I think it would be better if it was thinner or smaller. The service was good, friendly staff.

Great place to get all kinds of vegetarian and vegan food. We got two potato tacos and Tom’s Deep Plate with corn tortillas along with the tofu mushroom potatoes. Both were fresh and delicious! And HUGE! We love that we can order just about anything, including the rice and beans. This place has a low key fun vibe. But I wasn’t impressed with the cleanliness or physical condition.

I ordered tofu, potato, mushroom enchiladas. I wish I had added vegan cheese because I think it would have melted nicely into the sauce and been a good addition.

The food came out so fast and the employees were helpful and welcoming!

I love the decor. Trinkets! I’ll stop by again next time I visit!

Generous portion sizes and really damn delicious, authentic Mexican food. They were very accommodating to my low-carb diet and I was able to swap the carbs for guacamole. Such a hearty meal and we left completely stuffed and happy!

Very nice and cozy place with country Mexican vibe. The owner is very generous and courteous. We were severed hot and fresh food even though we were last customer to order. They didn’t bother us until we’re finished which was half hour past the closing time. I will highly recommend this place for a friendly experience with delicious food!

Plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. Huge portions and yummy. The tofu is nicely seasoned not just thrown in plain. The sangria was deliciously spiced. Service was friendly and helpful. Will be back soon to try the soyrizo breakfast burrito.
