Went on a Saturday at 4pm with my partner – this was an especially fancy treat for us and it was wonderful. The food was fantastic – starters were incredibly flavourful and compact, and mains were generous and delicious. Service throughout was perfect, equal parts casual and professional, with some lovely surprises brought to us across the meal. House wine was great, desserts were just as good. We’ve not tried a huge amount of somewhat expensive restaurants before, but would recommend this place to anybody.

Not only the best food Ive had on my 5 week trip to the UK from Sydney .. but some of the best food Ive ever eaten.

You could taste the love and care that went into each dish.. with every sauce slapping you in the face with flavour!

The meatballs I had for my starter were honestly to die for! I had to order them again to take back to my hotel room (see last photo )

The waitress who we found out was the chefs daughter was incredibly nice, and made us feel so welcome!

If I lived in Edinburgh, this would be my go to for an incredible feed!

BRAVO!

I celebrated my 60th birthday with close family and friends at Locanda De Gusti, in Dalry Road, Edinburgh, on 29 December and had an exceptionally good experience. The early stages of preparation were dealt with by email and the communication was very good. Owner and chef Rosario was very understanding about the fact that two of my guests might not make it due to old age and illness and said we could just let him know earlier the same day. We also had a meeting over coffee to discuss the menu. I made an addition to my red meat selection on the day itself, and there was no fuss or difficulty. The restaurant itself is very atmospheric and busy. The staff were lovely, warm, welcoming and attentive. The food was exceptional. We had a tasting menu that saw us share a selection of hot and cold starters, meat, fish and vegetarian, then a slection of pasta dishes to share from three platters, all were superb, then sharing platters of sea bass, lean lamb chops from racks of lamb and slices of rib eye, cooked to perfection, with a selection of vegetables as well. I didn’t want the fuss of a birthday cake so we had a small selection of desserts, but the staff put a candle in and sang ‘happy birthday’ anyway. We were welcomed with a very nice prosecco, and we moved on to Aglianico and Greco di Tufo, both from Campania, where Rosario and my own family hail from. It was a fantastic experience. At the end, the leftovers, including most of a bottle of Greco, were packaged up and brought to the table for us. I didn’t realise until we were on our way home that they had also included a full bottle of Greco, my favourite wine from Campania, as a gift. I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough. The price was extremely reasonable for the quality of the food and wine we had, as well as the service, so it’s not just a restaurant for special occasions, though it fits that mould very easily. Comfortably the best Italian restaurant I have experienced in Edinburgh.

Outstanding food and a great experience. Everything on the menu – from pasta with langoustines to blood orange sorbet – was excellent. The seafood platter was delicious and huge — so huge that we initially thought we had mistakenly been given a platter for two. Great coffee, limoncello, and grappa to finish it off. It’s pricey, but definitely worth it for a special occasion.

Grazie per il cibo buonissimo e l’ospitalita’!

A few weeks before our trip to Scotland, I started researching the best seafood spots in Edinburgh, and Locanda Di Gusti kept popping up as a top recommendation. I’m so glad I followed the reviews and made a reservation—it was hands down one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had.

Located about a mile and a half from our hotel on the Royal Mile, the walk itself was charming, offering peaceful views of the less touristy side of Edinburgh and even the backside of the castle.

But let’s talk about the real star: the food. We arrived hungry and started with a pasta dish to share, followed by the seafood bowl for two. This platter was a dream—octopus, clams, prawns, langoustines, calamari, and mussels—each bite incredibly fresh, perfectly cooked, and bursting with flavor. Truly the finest seafood we’ve ever tasted, and not even a hint of that overly “fishy” taste you sometimes get elsewhere.

We finished with a couple of desserts and two lattes, which capped the meal beautifully. While the bill was on the higher side, every penny felt well spent for the quality, flavor, and experience we received.

No regrets whatsoever—Locanda Di Gusti is a gem and absolutely worth the visit. Don’t miss it!

This is an excellent Italian restaurant. Unlike other posh Italian places, it gives me the warm feeling of visiting a friend’s home whenever I walk in. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the staff—both waiters and waitresses—are exceptionally friendly. As soon as we sat down, they kindly offered to hang our jackets, which made us feel well taken care of from the start.

Before we even ordered, I noticed a small but impressive detail—the hand-drying machine in the bathroom. Though the bathroom itself is not large, I was genuinely surprised by the machine that automatically dispenses paper towels. It’s a thoughtful touch that reflects the restaurant’s attention to detail.

As for the food—it was fantastic. The staff gave us helpful recommendations, and we started with an octopus dish and some fresh bread. For the mains, we ordered “Seafood on the Plate” and a beef pasta. Both were outstanding. The pasta with beef was truly legendary—rich, juicy, and cooked to perfection. The seafood platter was generous, with an impressive variety of fresh seafood. We finished everything, even the bread.

We also had two vanilla desserts, which were excellent. I ordered a glass of rosé wine, which was smooth and paired perfectly with our meal. Additionally, we were given two small portions of tomato sauce, which tasted incredibly fresh. To top it all off, the staff brought us two complimentary shots of lemon vodka—an excellent way to end the meal.

While the price is slightly on the expensive side, it is fair considering the quality of the food and service. Unlike many fine-dining restaurants, they don’t automatically add a service charge to the bill. I chose to leave a 15% tip, along with a little extra, as the experience truly deserved it.

Having lived in Edinburgh for four years, I can confidently say this is a restaurant I will return to often. If you’re looking for an exceptional Italian dining experience, or a special place to celebrate an anniversary, I highly recommend this one.

After a long work shift and four failed attempts at finding an open restaurant, Locanda graciously reignited their stoves just for me and served one of the best seafood pastas I’ve ever had. Despite being the last guest in the restaurant, the staff were exceptionally warm and welcoming, refusing to compromise on either the menu or the service. Their hospitality turned a frustrating evening into something truly memorable.

Delicious Italian food, excellent Fish and Seafood, authentic napolitan dishes. Everything was very well made, the pasta dishes with lobster and with a seafood medley were outstanding. You’ll feel like in the dining kitchen of a very friendly family, warm hearted service and great atmosphere. Excellent value for money.
