Great food. Amazing drinks. Beautiful service. I come 3-4 times a week. My order modifications are not only accommodated but encouraged as you can tell the servers and bartenders prioritize customer wants and needs. It’s a place I come to when I’m down, knowing I’m going to leave with a full belly and smile on my face. Thank you Lauren, Carly, Robert, Megan, Ruth and all the other staff that make this one of my top places to be and invite friends in Montgomery! ♥️

This was a nice little place that is putting together unusual combinations to make a mexican-neuvo style menu.
My first impression was of the friendly staff. The seating is kinda “out in the open”, though. The place was empty, and we were seated right in front of the bar, almost in the middle of the place. I guess I didn’t look like I liked the spot, because the server generously asked if we would rather sit somewhere else.
I’ve worked as a server. If they bring you to a spot, there is usually a reason, plus, I looked around and all the seating in the main room were basically the same. It has an “on display” feel, so it isn’t for an intimate meal! I didn’t see the other room, so I can’t speak to that. I told her it was fine where we were. And it was OK.
There are no complementary chips and salsa, as in most Mexican restaurants, so we ordered some. You choose 2 salsas from a list of some interesting mixtures. The ones recommended to me were the Rojo and the Verde. I think both had some sort of fire-roasted elements.
I’m pretty adventurous, but my dining partner can’t deal with too much spice. These are the two “least spicy” she said. They were not spicy at all. But they were extremely dark, bitter and salty (and I am a true sodium lover, so if it is salty to me, it is salty!). My companion thought the same. I could have dealt with the salt, but the bitterness was hard to get past. Like the char on the fire-roasted veggies were blended in, maybe? Not sure.
We didn’t eat much of it at all. We managed maybe 1/4 of the Rojo, but the Verde, we just couldn’t. I was sad, because chips and salsa are something I look forward to, when having Mexican.
I ordered the smoked brisket nachos. My companion ordered the pork burritos.
Let me say, the smoked brisket was divine! Tender, juicy and very smoky indeed! The nachos also came with pinto beans, sour cream, guacamole and a pico de gallo that was pretty good. I asked for extra so we could finish our chips we ordered, and received a small cup, and I wish, fervently, that the pico was on the menu as a salsa option. Sometimes, the simple things are best.
The pork burrito was very good too. Tender pork, well-flavored. The rice was fluffy and light and the pintos creamy and flavorful.
I would go back, but I would ask for pico as salsa, and I would find out if I could get a giant bowl of that brisket!

The food was absolutely delicious. I wasn’t expecting anything great walking in, but walking out…so good! I had the burger which was cooked to perfection. I tried the brisket quesadilla and I will definitely get it next time. I heard the fried chicken is the best in town. The sweet tea was just right.

Bottom line, if it was anything like our experience, you will love it!

Service was a tad slow, but we did have a large party.

My husband and I came here to eat twice while we visited Montgomery. It was a treat both times! The staff is friendly, efficient, and kind. We highly recommend the adobada tacos and the non-alcoholic sparkling drinks! The Little Donkey is wonderful!

Nice facility and is much larger than it looks from outside. Tam Tolliver had her baby shower there. It has a separate meeting space for private parties. Enjoyed the atmosphere

Oh my goodness….doesn’t matter if you cater your son’s rehearsal dinner or dine in, the food is absolutely amazing!!!! The owner David is awesome and we’ve known him for years.

The only time we dine in is when we know Tawny is working! She is the most energetic, sweet, funny and efficient server there! She makes our experience a 10/10!

A few years ago, my family and I dined at Little Donkey in East Chase and were not impressed. I am a once-and-done person. If I do not enjoy my meal, the experience, the atmosphere, etc., I will not return, but my husband was adamant about dining there again. We went, and I am glad we did.
This experience at Little Donkey was delicious. You should not expect the meal here to replicate any other establishment in the Montgomery area, as their “flair” is unique but enjoyable. We enjoyed the Queso Con Carne (BBQ sauce on the side) and the Pick 2 Salsas (Rojo, Verde) with chips. Our meal choices were the fajitas (brisket and grilled chicken), with black beans, and the Smoked Chicken Burrito Bowl. Our entire meal was delicious, well-presented, and well-portioned. We drank water and margaritas with Tajin rims. We tried the pomegranate, watermelon, and blueberry swirls, as well as the traditional margaritas during Happy Hour.
I am big on service and will travel for it. People underestimate the impact of service on new and repeat customers. Yes, we want our food to be worth returning for. However, unless the meal was unappealing, tasteless, or lacked quality or quantity, we may give the establishment another chance, especially if the service was exceptional.
During our first experience, the food and the waitress “fell flat.” She wasn’t bad or good; she was just our waitress. She took our orders, brought our items, and checked on us a few times, but nothing special. This time, our waitress, Mya, was exceptional. She was knowledgeable about Little Donkey, including its menu items, ingredients, preparation, and locations. Her descriptions and recommendations made our meal choices simple. She did an impeccable job of upselling and making recommendations based on the items we chose.
In my lifetime, I have been waited on by 3 people who have impressed me, and Mya is one of them. She received assistance from Mina, a kind soul who understands what teamwork means and how to make it happen, in delivering items to our table. Mya was called away by a superior, and Mina stepped in. She was a great substitute while Mya was away.
Mya shared information about events at the location, including Happy Hour. She was busy, but we never felt unattended. Every question we had was answered without hesitation, and when our meal arrived, she gave us time to eat before asking, “How is everything?” In fact, she used open-ended questioning, she asked, “What do you like about the _______?” When she asked about our current meal, she recommended what we should try next week. Did we have plans to return next week? No, but she may have convinced us. I could not be more impressed by this young lady.
To the General Manager or Owner, I would like to make a recommendation. I don’t know who your training manager is, or whether you have a company trainer for your waitstaff. If you don’t, Mya is the person for that job. I highly recommend investing in her. I believe she would be a great fit for training new hires and assisting with opening and training at new locations. Professional Waiter Training Companies exist, and I recommend doing your research, making a selection, and investing in Mya. It has been a long time since I’ve been impressed by wait staff, not in a fine dining restaurant, and I am far from easy to impress. If the right person comes into your establishment and is waited on by Mya, you may lose her. I have been a hiring manager, and we look for people of this caliber.
The About section of Little Donkey’s website mentions Joshua Gentry greeting neighbors and strangers the same way—honoring his mantra of respect for everyone. Mya replicated this, and I believe she is the kind of waitstaff every customer would appreciate. Don’t lose her; she is an invaluable asset to your company and could help your business grow by selling the product and building customer relationships.
My husband and I look forward to being waited on by Mya again, but we would sincerely like to see her talent used more effectively.

Great friendly staff who take excellent care of their guests. Food came out promptly and was great. I had the brisket and shrimp fajitas and they were great. The tortillas were warm and fresh, the brisket was tender and had great flavor. Matched with the food I had a Watermellon margarita and it was very refreshing and tasted great!

If you are looking for a fancier take on Mexican food, this is your place!

Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Food was awesome! Their fried chicken, black beans and rice was delish, maybe the best fried chicken around these parts! My friend had tacos and said they were very good! This restaurant had a really good vibe, and I liked that there was outdoor seating as well! I’ll definitely return!!
