Off the bat, the exterior seems kinda plain but the inside the area is themed just like how it would be coming into a brick and mortar South American restaurant. Latin music, treats and snacks from their country. Service was swift, steady and courteous as it took no longer than 5 minutes for my food to reach my table.
My lunch for the day was the Grilled Chicken Pabellon Lunch Special, Chicken Empanada, Tequequava and Tamarind juice. When the pabellon got to my table I thought it was a little on the small side but it was surprisingly filling. The Grilled chicken, a bit on the salty side still had taste to it and it was a good mix to go with the rice and beans. I loved the texture of the Empanada I had and the Tequequava (Cheeze & Guava stick) was actually superb. Never thought Mozzarella cheese could mix well with Guava fruit, but it was a solid blend. The Tamarind juice was sweet and savory. That was quite a meal I’ve ordered yet came just under $30 so everything was reasonably priced.
The place is on a seemingly sketchy area of Cypress Hills but it’s worth a second visit because the food is good and the menu has a bevy of choices there.
In total with both days combined, I ordered Shredded Beef Pabellon, a 9″ Venezuelan Grilled Steak Sandwhich, a Dominican Chicken Empanada, a Dominican Beef Empanada, a YOYO sweet plantain sandwich with shredded beef, a sweet plantain sandwich with shredded chicken, and a tequeguava. I really wanted to immerse myself in the items they sold and the different flavors.
The Shredded Beef Pabellon came with white rice, black beans, shredded beef, and 3 sweet plantains – every bite a delight 10/10
Dominican Chicken Empanada was very flavourful and juicy. Most chicken empanadas I’ve tried are usually dry 8/10 and not because it was lacking anything, just because of my own tastebuds.
Dominican Beef Empanada if you like olives you will love this. It is very flavorful and well seasoned.
Sweet plantain with shredded beef and the chicken sandwich 9/10 it was really good. I had to eat it with a spoon because the mix of the condiments with the lettuce and tomato had it falling apart, but that was not an issue!
9″ Venezuelan Steak Sandwhich was amazing! Every bite packed a punch 11/10
Tequeguave- 11/10 i adored this. The flavor profile was delightful. The guava, fried cheese, and fried dough fully complimented one another.
This is definitely a place my family and I will continue to order from.
Update: I don’t know what went wrong this last visit but my sandwich just completely missed the mark. The plantain bun was too thin and dry so everything was falling apart. The fried cheese, lettuce and tomatoes were a fraction of what they normally are. And the sandwiches were not hot. I complained and it was taken back. I took the replacement to go but I didn’t enjoy it either. My husband didn’t enjoy his cachapas…it was cold.
