We had dinner at the Last Kind Words Saloon twice during our recent stay at the Ranch at Death Valley. I thankfully took the advice from the web site and made reservations in advance. The weekend before we got there it was totally booked. The service was great — very friendly and attentive. If you ask for advice on what to get, you will get good advice. The food was good. I had a nice filet one night and salmon on the second night. Both were prepared very nicely. One note — it is not cheap. There is a reason they don’t put prices on the menu on-line. But the buffet next door is over $30/person. Remember, you are in Death Valley and there aren’t many choices. All in all, we enjoyed our meals and our time there.

What a cool place to be in, but… That only goes so far. The food portions were HUGE however the food was not fresh tasting and cheap materials used for the price. 5 star price for barely Dennys level food. The ribs BBQ sauce tasted like ketchup with hot sauce added to it. The prime tasted like old meat. It’s definitely a monopoly around the desert and that’s what keeps it in business in my opinion.

Great atmosphere with the wild west decor, feels like an old upscale saloon. Food was pretty good, so was the service. Slow in the daytime but night time is more lively. Next to a gift shop with the souvenirs. Second time around, will return here next time.

Our experience here was awesome. We had to wait little considering they were crazy busy and short staffed we understood. We sat in patio which has nice ambience. We ordered pistachio pasta and some burger. Both dishes were crazy expensive but delicious. We were eating in the middle of desert after all. Their decor is something to admire and staff was very friendly.

Was nervous going to eat because of the negative reviews….some of them were really hilarious and I thought I have to step up my review game. But here’s the deal…we had a really great attentive waiter Jose, we had prime rib, the filet, chili, and a kale salad. The 2 of us that had the filet were really happy. Cooked perfectly. Expensive if you’re used to Sizzler but not any more than a Vegas Steak house. 2 had prime rib, 1 said excellent 1 wished he had ordered it a little more well done. They both ordered medium rare. 1 had kale salad, not baby kale, a little tough should have been massaged but the stuff with it was good, the chili was excellent and came with cheese onions and sour cream..added chips from our left over chips and salsa appetizer and was really good. So for our last night together before we all go our separate ways it was great!

Wow this makes a trip to Death Valley worth it especially if you’re worried about there being nothing to eat. This large complex with a huge gift shop and great dining room presents a terrific American barroom menu with good quality food and an Old West saloon atmosphere to boot.

DO NOT LISTEN TO ANY GOOD REVIEWS. I’ve had two meals here now and both have been worse than gas station food. The steak was not seasoned and when I asked for a medium rare steak I got a well done steak. It seems that the only place with good food is the general store, and even there only get the frozen stuff. That says a lot that a prepackaged meal was better than their pizza that costs $21 and a tiny steak that costs $50. The servers and staff are amazing to the point I feel bad that they have to work here. GO TO TOLL ROAD in Stovepipe wells. Their food is reasonably priced and wayyyyy better.

Death Valley food is sort of the same wherever you go so don’t feel as if you missed out by not eating somewhere, imo. Being in the park means paying dearly. A burger is $21 average. No joke. That’s without fries in some places. If you can bring food from outside and cook it, that’s your best bet. But for the experience and the convenience, the food is not bad here. You’ll get to see highlights of the 40 mule wagon and the borax mining pictures. All the stuff that could have ruined a beautiful place. Thank goodness for the National Parks system.
