Lao-Thai: Discover Authentic Laotian Thai Flavors in Toronto
Reviews
With its expansive menu and flavours that are not Lao-sy at all, your hands will be Thai’d as to picking your dishes. However, I couldn’t resist their juicy and meaty Lao Sausage that explodes with salivating pork, barely held together with a thin, crisp casing. Burst with porky umami and a fragrant blend of herbs and spices, most notably kaffir lime leaves, which add a slightly tangy, earthy, leafy aroma. Grilled to a beautiful golden-brown exterior, it’s a beauty to be marvelled at. Another standout was the Nam Kao, each bite blending a harmonious balance of crispy coconut rice, coconut milk richness, sweet fried onions, Laotian cured meat, scallions, cilantro, lime, and lettuce. It’s a symphony that engages all senses, from the audible, palatable crisp, the undeniably fragrant rice, to the bouncy, sweet, and vinegared taste of the meat. Meanwhile, topping off the fried rice – which, with the abundance of vegetables, reminds me of my youth – are moist, flavourful pieces of fried chicken. While the marinade has penetrated into the fibres of the tender meat, the batter throws an addictive crunch at you, along with a melody of aromatic seasonings. The soups are also perfect for this weather – spicy, warming, and aromatic – and you definitely should get at least one. My favourite was the Tom Yum fortis hot and sour profile with a mild sweetness, embellished with scallions, lemongrass, garlic, herbs and cilantro; the novelty of the Souk Gai shouldn’t be understated, though. For some easy and comforting dishes, the Cilantro Shrimp is stir-fried with a sweet-savory sauce with herbs and served over some shredded carrots. The stir-fried yellow noodles absorbed the savory oyster sauce and were complemented by tender beef and vegetables.
My dining partner got the Tom Yum soup and said it was quite good.
Service was not that great, we had to waive down somebody to come take our order after waiting 10mins
I’d come again to try some of their other dishes
We ended up getting the shrimp rolls, stuffed crab, chicken fried rice, & the Pad Thai and genuinely the food was delicious. Dylan suggested the Pad Thai & that was probably me & my girlfriend’s favourite dish from what we ordered, & the food was handed out in such a quick time from when we ordered. The Server again did not make us feel dumb for not knowing what to order from the menu as this was me & my girlfriend’s first time at a Lao restaurant. He explained all the dishes in great detail, stayed patient & made us feel very welcome.
I will definitely recommend for people to come to Lao Thai & I will for sure come back in the future.
The decor/vibe was very basic but I thought maybe the food would be lovely and authentic. Unfortunately the red curry I had was very watery and lacking flavour. We shared spring rolls and crispy wontons to start and they were so-so. Okay, but nothing amazing.
The server was lovely though, and the music being played was great!
The service was okay, it was a busy night and the server was as attentive as possible, but there were a lot of people coming in.
Would not revisit, but was nice supporting a smaller business.
