came for 2026 restaurant week lunch and did not disappoint ! super limited seating, definitely recommend a reservation. ordered the kimchi pancake, chicken nanban, and green tea ice cream and everything was delicious. (also pictured: cold noodles, tofu bimbambop, and topioca pudding)

Wow I’ll definitely be back! My partner got a couple beers, while I got a plum soda – both were awesome! We also shared japanese flan and an egg salad sando, and both were wonderful! The atmosphere is super chill and the staff is very friendly. I’m SO glad this place is in the neighborhood!

took me a while to venture out here after it opened (been going to Konbini & Kanpai on Belmont for years and love it so much) — but so glad i finally made it in!

lovely owners, nice space, the bar is really pretty, and most importantly the food and drinks were great. Chicago has had a huge gap in non-sushi Japanese food and glad to see this add to the mix.

the sando, katsu, and appetizers were excellent and the sake and cocktail companions were great!

and don’t sleep on the Japanese flan — as a pretty serious connoisseur of flans, this was a winner!

looking forward to the next stop in.

Delicious food, refreshing drinks and friendly staff in a welcoming atmosphere. The chicken and the pork on the sandwiches were each tender, juicy and flavorful! Portions are perfect and prices are reasonable. They even have a nice patio for warmer weather!

Finally made it here and I cant wait to come back. The food here is delicious. I dont typically get super excited for cold noodles, but I loved the cold noodles here. The tonkatsu (tried the sandwich and plate) was very, very good. I was so excited to see nama sake too. Thank you so much. We will be back soon.

Delicious food! Great hospitality!

Yummy Asian inspired cocktails and beer. My husband had the yuzu lager and I had some sake from Hiroshima. It was delicious.

Amazing dishes and excellent service.
Small seating area. Also, a small wall of snacks and treats, as well as, pick your own beverages

Street parking is as easy to find.

As a Japanese American who’s family lived in area, it is so nice to have this business, located in what used to be Japantown. While a more modernized izakaya experience, it feels like Konbini & Kanpai is homage to the community that once filled every store in the area (including the owners family). They are keeping the memory of our community alive. The staff is enthusiastic, not pretentious, about sake allowing their customers to ask questions if they want but not to overwhelm them with info. They sell American-made AND women-owned sake brands (& plenty of Japanese convenience store items). If you are an enthusiast of Japanese culture or know about the history of our community in Chicago, please consider supporting this local business!

Excellent food and drinks. The prices were very fair as well. We had the chicken teriyaki, crab Rangoon dip, cucumbers, a bao and of course had to get the flan. All very great…Will be returning soon!

Came for the World Sake Day tasting which was a great value for the price. Had some really good offerings and some unusual ones as well. The staff and sake reps were all super nice, friendly, and well-informed. The food was overall ok. The crab rangoon dip was good although a few chips seemed kind of stale because they were so hard. The karaage was moist on the inside but we weren’t fond of the batter as it was reminiscent of something from Harold’s chicken shack. The tonkatsu sando was delicious and perfectly executed. The egg salad sando, however, left much to be desired. The jammy egg was probably 30secs too well done, the bread was stale, and not enough mayo, salt, or pepper used. Seeing as how they have Konbini in their name, it would be great if they offered instant noodles as a dine-in option as well for a snack.
