No matter what “ice cream ” place I go to, a chocolate, hot fudge brownie sundae is my Go-To. (I’m actually obsessed w/brownie sundaes.) Kline’s has the best. I decided to order the apple crisp sundae for my husband. I was curious so I tasted it (a few times ). We both agree that it is the best tasting sundae EVER!!

If you’re a JMU alumni, undoubtedly you have visited or heard of Kline’s. Starting in downtown Harrisonburg in 1943 and opening other stores in the area, Kline’s has featured their custard style ice cream made fresh every day in each of their stores. Recently, the first Kline’s opened in Richmond on Hull Street Rd in Western Chesterfield near Otterdale Rd. Specialty ice creams like Red Raspberry and Oreo Peppermint change frequently, while perennial favorites like vanilla and chocolate are constant choices. Tons of milkshake flavors are on the menu, as well as sundaes. We were delighted with the generous portions and creamy texture and rich taste of our single scoop cups.

It’s ice cream. Unclear if it’s ice cream or custard; sign says old fashioned custard but the cups said ice cream on them. It’s good, for sure, but definitely on the expensive side. We asked if they had a kids size and she said yes but turns out that’s the same as a small ($5). It’s pretty big though for a small. Did not see a sign for flavors of the day, cashier had to say them to us (they are posted online, just not that the register). Really nice covered area to eat in.

Prices are very high for what you get. My regular size “sundae” (plain custard with hot fudge) was $6 – photo added for size. My husband got their twist on a Blizzard – an $8 “flurry”. He said it had very limited toppings in it until he got to the bottom, which was absolutely solid with M&M’s. The ice cream nachos are a fun novelty, though they’re $9. We were especially shocked by the $4 pup cup, as I’m used to those being free or maybe $1. I ordered a snickers custard, which was posted right on the window as a flavor option, only to be told that it’s “not ready” at 1pm. Later, they brought out a sign that said nothing about snickers, but did say they had raspberry (which was not on their window sign)? Very confusing.
Head a bit further up the road to Jimer’s Frozen Custard – you can support local there too and get SO much more custard for half the price! And free pup cups!
It did look very clean in the back and the custard was fine. My husband said he was “whelmed” (as opposed to “overwhelmed”).
Also, beware of the yellow jackets…though that’s standard this time of year anywhere with outdoor sweet treats.

Soooo we were nervous to try it out, we went to the one in Harrisonburg a few years ago. So, to surprise my little nephew, we went for ice cream.
While in the drive-thru, we saw the car ahead get something, and from the distance, babe said that it looked good. I want that…..well we get to the window and he said what did the car before us have…….the young girl said Reese sundae with whip cream…….his response “i will take that” then had the nerve to ask for a cherry on top….LMBO!!!!! We both got the Reese Sundae me no whip and my Lil nephew is plain vanilla ice cream (please don’t judge him he is 5yrs old and learning the love of ice cream)…….
The Reese cup sundae was amazing!!!! Hands down……go, get it, and thank us later!!!!

Honestly the best ice cream I’ve ever had! I had raspberry and it was delicious! We went during their soft opening and everyone was so nice and welcoming!
