I was looking for something different and this place popped up, so i took a drive to Garfield. Heads up, it’s not where your gps brings you to, it’s around the corner on the cross street.
Stepped in and was greeted by the nicest lady who immediately offered me a sip of their “uptown” drink – a mix of iced tea and lemonade. It was quite tasty.
That was just the beginning of the warmth that this establishment exuded, they were super nice and friendly. They asked my name, but I forgot to ask theirs. As I waited for my food, she began bringing me samples of the sides and desserts. She had me sample the banana pudding (she asked first if I ate bananas) – this was super flavorful of banana, as another review said, not just vanilla pudding with some sliced bananas in it.
Beyond that, she brought me a little piece of frosted banana bread, a dense, rich flavorful lemony cake, and a frosted pound cake. The lemony one was my favorite.
Next came a bit of sweet potatoes, with huge flavor that I haven’t really experienced before in a dish like this. She also let me try the mac and cheese (great spices in it!) and collard greens (tastes just how you expect!), as well as one of their “French fries” which is a round slice of potato, really good and so much more interesting than normal fries. She brought this out with her rib sauce to taste/dip, which was also good.
She also had some great conversation about boxing and bringing the neighborhood together.
When I got my food, it was bursting out of the takeout container and she had to use a rubber band to keep it closed.
The cutlery set came with A dumdum lollipop and a piece of bubble gum as well.
I ordered: 2 piece fried chicken – leg and thigh with mac and cheese and collard greens and cornbreak. They also added a few fries in, coleslaw, and hot sauce.
The chicken was tasty, but the pieces were huge! The cornbread was dense and sweet, delicious. The coleslaw was super creamy.
I’ll be back and I’d encourage anyone nearby to check it out.

Best soul food experience EVER. I felt like I was in my auntie’s kitchen. The owners run a very clean establishment with all the fixings. I will definitely be back for the home made butter biscuits and Sunday brunch with fish and grits. While I waited I was treated with samples of their various delicious dishes available, including the hot apple cobbler that just came out the oven! Everything was delicious. My son’s chicken tenders and fries were made from scratch! I was impressed and so glad I found a go to spot for southern food. The owner was even nice enough to help me out to my car with his umbrella after it began pouring raining. There just aren’t many places that understand the importance of good customer service anymore and how it relates to customer retention. They have earned a loyal customer❤️I’ve been back 3 weekends in a row .

They make you feel welcome and like this wasn’t the first time they met you. Very open with sampling and love to see their customers enjoy their food. And the ribs were great with the Mac and cheese and candied yams for $35. Totally would recommend and will be coming back to try more.
Only taking a star from the atmosphere solely because of the amount of space around the place, but still very good place nonetheless.

Sometimes it’s the little “cubbyhole in the wall” that pleasantly surprises you, as was the case of this joint tucked away on the side of the building (Grand & Palisade), a beautiful tag-team duo, who CLEARLY love to cook, and KNOW what they’re doing in the kitchen. This place serves up basic Soul Food fare with love and a whole lot of soul. And WONDERFULLY they put as much diligence in their dessert options as they do their main dishes.
I had the full-flavored, fall-off-the-bone Rib Dinner, w/ Mac n’ Cheese & Candied Yams as sides. Tender and packed w/flavor mac n cheese, while the yams hit SO HARD, I wished they served large sizes. And I had the 1st bite of the freshly-made Peach Cobbler… PERFECTION! Also their Banana Pudding?! EVERYTHING is fresh, not from a box.
If you’re a fan of Soul Food, I highly recommend. In a largely Hispanic neighborhood in quiet Garfield, just listen for the Old-Skool RnB music, and then follow your nose.

We visited this place for the first time and the food and the atmosphere was amazing. We had the fried chicken, potato salad, collards, candied yams, corn bread. We also had the banana pudding. Y’all, not only is the food great but the owners are even better! My husband and I stumbled upon this place accidentally today, a Saturday afternoon, after initially wanting to try out another soul food spot (which was closed), and babyyyyy, let me tell you! WE ARE SO HAPPY WE FOUND HERE! From the moment we walked in, the customer service was TOP NOTCH and the owner was so nice and hospitable! Catfish? Nice, crispy, and seasoned greatly! Mac and Cheese? Creamy and on-point! Greens were amazing! Just go!!

Greta atmosphere and beautiful place, and the customer service was amazing. When we entered they first gave us some uptown (tea and lemonade) and it was great. The sourness and sweetness perfectly mix. While waiting for food striking up a conversation was easy, and they had such a kind, friendly aura to them. Lastly, the food was the best part, it came out quickly in gigantic portions and every last bit was delicious and excellently seasoned. Overall, this place is a hidden gem, and a great place to go to if you’re ever around.

This place is a gem! I was craving Mac and cheese and when I looked at the menu decided to check it out. Incredible food. I got the rib dinner with collards and mac and cheese. The dinner comes with four big St. Louis ribs that had a really nice bark and great sauce. They were tender but had a nice chew (because ribs shouldn’t fall off the bone) Collards were well seasoned and not soupy. The mac and cheese was incredible. Creamy and perfectly seasoned. The portion was huge. The banana pudding was fantastic. It actually tastes like banana because it’s not just vanilla pudding with cut up bananas. I got two meals out of this dinner.
The service was also fantastic. While I was waiting for my order to be prepared I was given some tastes of other items. The turkey and cobblers were great. The owners are incredibly friendly and we had a lovely conversation. Check this place out! I will definitely be going back.

This is the BEST SOUL FOOD IN NEW JERSEY!!! 10 out of 10 I highly recommend. Not only was the food taste amazing but they also make you feel like your family as soon as you walk in the door. I will definitely be coming back again and again. Thank you for you delicious food and your hospitality.
