Everything took me straight back to the time when I lived in Japan. The food is amazing, based on traditional dishes with a modern touch, filled with flavour and goodness. The staff are friendly and welcoming. I love the atmosphere and aesthetic of the place. There are tons of tiny little cool details and miniatures scattered throughout the restaurant. Great place with amazing food, I highly recommend!

Finally found a spot that does Okonomiyaki justice in Cape Town. If you haven’t tried it before, you definitely should give this spot a go for something unique in the mother city. Their Onigiri selection is also a great touch. It’s rare to find a place that nails both of these Japanese staples so well in South Africa (they also have a few unique varieties for those that are a bit unsure about the traditional options). A must-visit if you are looking for something different. They also have a happy hour with great drinks specials, Japanese whisky and one of a kind cocktails.

The Haka Soda and food offerings took me straight back to Japan! But, unfortunately the food left us wanting just a bit more… a bit more soya sauce/salt, a bit more acid, a bit more filling in the Oni. It’s a lovely experience if, like me, you want to relive some of the magic of Japanese cuisine, or if, like my husband, you would like to find out what all of these dishes are about! It’s lovely to see a rise in street food restaurants in the City. The food at How’s your Oni is almost there… it just needs a bit of refinement.

This was my first time experience authentic Japanese food and it was amazing. The restaurant was happy to accommodate our large table and it did not impact the service at all. We all had a fantastic time trying the different dishes. Definitely a top restaurant for me this year.

I had the Honey Butter Chicken Onigiri and the Chicken Karaage and both were absolutely delicious. The chicken was cooked to perfection: juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside. The rice in the onigiri was basically sushi quality, so scrumptious!

Our server was friendly and helpful, offering great suggestions that we ended up loving. The vibe is awesome, the decor is engaging and immersive — just a wonderful experience in general.

This was my first time trying Japanese cuisine, and it completely exceeded my expectations. I’ll definitely be back — and I’ll be recommending it to friends too!

Delicious food! It’s a small place with limited seating, but it has a cozy, welcoming vibe. I tried okonomiyaki for the first time and absolutely loved it. The udon noodles were also full of flavor. They have takoyaki on the menu too—sadly, I was too full this time, but it’s first on my list for next visit!

Love, love, love the food here. Absolutely amazing and filling.
My issue is that it is only recently that we were made aware of the halal constraints. Some of the broths are not halal so I would advise everyone to ask before. The service was amazing though as they offered (and did) make halal udon broth for us and it was just as delicious.

I just have the suggestion for How’s Your Oni staff to add to the menu which foods are completely halal, or ask customers if they need halal broth.

Otherwise amazing restaurant and amazing staff!
