The word hom means fragrance, and mali means jasmine. Thai Hom Mali rice is a non-glutinous rice that is considered one of the world’s most delicious and highest quality rice varieties. It is known for its soft texture, aroma, and cooking quality. The rice is often used in Thai dishes like stir-fries, soups, and with grilled, fried, or braised foods

– Thai Iced Tea and Coconut Matcha Cloud: The Thai iced tea was strong and fragrant. The coconut matcha cloud is also very flavorful and unique with coconut meat.
– Garlic Chili Wings, Corn Fritter, and Tom Kha: While the corn fritter was okay, the garlic chili wings were great; they were crispy and juicy. Tom Kha is also good, sour, rich, and a little spicy!
– Pork Crisp, Pad Kee Mao, and Ginger Branzino: The pork crisp is okay, the pork is flavorful and the sauce is sweet and spicy. The Pad Kee Mao is very generous with the meat, and overall, it is spicy and tasty. The Ginger Branzino was the star of the show! The fish was very good and crispy.
– Coconut Ice Cream and Mango with Sticky Rice: The presentation of the desserts was certainly impressive, and the flavor matched that. Very sweet way to finish our dinner.
Overall, the restaurant itself was beautifully decorated and the atmosphere was very relaxing. The staff cared about our opinions on the food and made sure we enjoyed the dishes. We will definitely be coming back!
They are also offering a 20% discount for the first week to celebrate the grand opening.
Both my precious and my BFF exclaimed, “We are definitely coming back to try out the rest of the menu,” which boasts some unfamiliar offerings (items I have never seen on a Thai menu) on an extensive menu yet captured on only 2 pages at very reasonable prices. The chef has an eye for beauty besides a near perfect handle on the flavors and the proprietor did not cheap out on the serving ware and utensils, all with an eye to aesthetics…though the shallow big circumference water glass should be replaced with something more classy.
We had plenty of beverage before coming, so did not try out their prominently positioned bar, manned by someone who looks like a professional bar tender which almost never happens at a mom and pop Asian restaurant, usually just a relative or poorly trained server staff. Next time.
Wow, such a wonderful addition! Very few Thai (let alone Asian) restaurants in upper Mo Co measure up. Thai Rock on Rockville Pike is a contestant but is pricier with a bit less than satisfactory qualify of service (primarily due to language barrier n illiteracy of American cultural expectation). We are not foodies but very critical of eateries when it comes to the dining out experience, esp. on the authenticity of flavors and ingredients, and the presentation.
I’ll probably give it another try as it’s very conveniently located for me. All the other reviews are glowing so maybe I just caught them on a bad night.
We were greeted so warmly, and immediately struck by how beautiful the restaurant is. Every detail in the layout and decor has been thought out – it feels fresh, clean, and truly inviting.
Started with some refreshing beers and a Matcha Cloud drink that was pure magic ☁️ . For appetizers, the unique Lotus “chips” with a vibrant fresh mint sauce were a crispy-meets-refreshing combo. But the real showstopper? The ribs! We found out they’re sous vide first for unbelievable tenderness, then quick-fried for that perfect crisp, all coated in a delicious Thai sauce. The chef’s thoughtfulness truly shines through!
For mains, we dove into the Duck Noodle Soup (rich, flavorful broth, perfect for a chilly evening!) and the Boat Noodle Soup (just the right amount of heat and depth). Portions are generous, so come hungry! The Prik Gua – battered shrimp in a chili garlic sauce – also did not disappoint.
Seriously, HomMali clicked on all cylinders: incredible food, genuinely welcoming staff-including the owner/chef, and a gorgeous setting. We’re already planning our next trip back! Highly, highly recommend!
I ordered the Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodles). While it was well-balanced and delicious, I’d personally love a bit more basil next time to really punch up that “drunken” flavor. However, the real star was my wife’s Chicken Massaman. It was my first time trying it, and it was phenomenal. She usually has a small appetite, but she polished off the entire bowl! We finished with the Mango Sticky Rice, which was the perfect sweet ending and brought back some wonderful nostalgic memories of our early dating days.
Adding stars because the restaurant didn’t mind taking it back and cooking it more (although it came back well done, but I expect this would happen anytime a restaurant brought beef back to the kitchen).
The vibes and appearance of the restaurant overall warrant a visit, but certainly not for the crying tiger.
