This was a nice quick stop on my visit in Iowa. I will be back and forth often, so I was scoping local areas. They were quick and those working the Salad Co Side were helpful and talkative. The soup was really good and the grilled cheese sandwich was decent. I marked one star down because their hours were not correct, and we wouldn’t have come in, or rushed if we knew this. One side is the Heirloom Salad Co and the other is the Java House. No big deal, but walking in and seeing a coffee house type menu and no salads or sandwiches left all 3 of us wondering what we did wrong. Again, online hours say the Heirloom Salad Co is open til 5pm, but when we walked in @ 230 pm, they said they close @ 3pm and that we’d have to eat in the Java area if we werent done by 3, since the Java House was open longer.
The Java side had no tables big enough open for 3 people. It was packed, but the salad company was empty, so we rushed to eat there. The soup was also almost gone, so they gave us slightly smaller portions, and offered extra crackers. Again no big deal, just wish we were given an options. Anyway the overall experience was decent. We were the only 3, so the atmosphere was quiet and calm. Giant windows let in natural light and they had cool photos on the walls. The Java area was really cool too, as far as the artwork and set up, but I suppose thats a different review.

My egg sandwich was disgusting. The potato roll is hard, egg is so hot it’s overcooked unbelievably and the bacon is old.

UPDATE: they asked me to reach out over email, but ignored me.

For starters, it’s a very cute spot to eat lunch or have a coffee. We saw many students working while eating/drinking.
On to the food, there is a nice variety of sandwiches you can order from and can watch them be made. We ordered the Italian salami melt and the caprese chicken. Both were very delicious sandwiches. Prices are fair for the quality of ingredients they use.

First time experience, as we looked over the menu to decide what we wanted, the young lady never said a word. Not a hello welcome in, nothing….
We proceeded to order the Loom 2, I asked her what the best selling sandwich was, she gave me three options. I chose the caprese sandwich and the Thai chicken salad. I looked at the order screen and just for me it was $18. I then seen the fine print that it was just a classic side salad. So I chose the Asian side salad.
My daughter also did a Loom 2 and she chose the Santa fe sandwich and a classic caeser side salad.
The young lady named Candence rang in 2 caeser salads (not my asian salad) and our sandwiches.
When we got our food, we both received a caprese sandwich instead of my daughter getting her santa fe sandwich and we both received caeser salads, not my Asian and her caeser salad as ordered.
It will be the only $30 that I spend here. Hopefully retraining and explaining that friendliness & accuracy goes a long way.

I really want to like Heirloom, I really do. It has all the makings of a cute cafe with really good food. They have big windows which let the natural light in and are connected to a coffee shop giving it homey vibes. It has a cute name and logo. They have sandwiches, salads, and soups and unique options at that. However, the food at Heirloom left me wanting more. More warmth, more satisfaction.

I ordered the Turkey and Avocado sandwich which was cold. It was good but I felt like I could have easily made a comparable sandwich at home. There just wasn’t anything that wowed me about the flavor. I also had the Heirloom chili which was good (not very bean-heavy) and I found myself dipping the sandwich in the chili to give it the extra something it needed.

I also nibbled on my sister’s Philly cheesesteak sandwich (needed a spicy element or the chili to dip into) and my mom’s custom salad (nothing special). I rarely get sandwiches out because they are almost always disappointing and this confirmed that.

The most annoying part was that the people doing the chopped salads were making so much noise. We couldn’t hear ourselves talk from across the restaurant. There has to be a quieter way for them to chop those salads.

If I come back to Iowa city, I don’t think I’ll be coming back to Heirloom.

I doordashed a breakfast sandwich on a bagel and got it on a biscuit. I also ordered tomato soup and got a completely different soup. This has happened multiple times when I order delivery and 50% of the time I receive the wrong items it’s like a gamble. I’m not sure if this means they are out of the item (in which they should have the delivery driver call me) or if they simply gave me the wrong item but it is extremely frustrating.

Lovely atmosphere and good vibe. Enjoyed the drink special too. It is a good way to try something new that you are unsure about.

Paid 12$ for the equivalent of a crappy airport salad. Supposed to be a Cobb- hardly any egg, cheese, wilted romaine- invisible avocado. Not sure why this place is even there. Took more than 15 minutes to get and not even busy.

Ordered a large salad, paid for a large salad, and got a small. The greens were clearly about 2 – 2.5 inches below the brim of the bowl.

I also had to coach the gal mixing my Harvest Fruit and Nut Salad on which ingredients belonged in the bowl, as she forgot to include certain elements.

What a great place. Met a young man named Carter last Thursday. He was making jokes as I ordered food, it was a lovely time. I ordered a morning muscle, and it came out perfectly. Keep going young man! Will be visiting Java House again soon!
