After a recommendation from a local, I decided to give this place a try instead of going to my usual spot when visiting Woodward. The vehicle I was driving was a little on the large side, so finding a parking spot took some effort. Once I did, I made a quick walk to the front of the building and went inside.

Right away, I could tell this was a historical place—probably a building that’s over a hundred years old. You can just feel that it used to be an important spot. That’s why what I’m about to say feels a little disappointing: the décor of the restaurant does not reflect the elegance or history of the building. Such a missed opportunity! They could have used the architecture to their advantage when decorating, but instead, the place has that classic late ’90s, early 2000s Mexican restaurant look—bright colors, flowers everywhere, and loud décor that went out of style about a decade ago. A simple refresh with a more modern and elegant touch would truly make this place stand out and complement the food.

On the food side, I had already been recommended the molcajete, so I didn’t spend too much time with the menu. But during the brief moment I looked at it—wow. Once again, the all-too-familiar “typical Mexican restaurant menu” with what feels like a hundred different options. Honestly, it’s overwhelming. It almost feels like the customer is being punished, reading and reading just to find something to order.

I always tell restaurants: having too many dishes isn’t necessarily a good thing. Sure, it looks impressive, but in reality, people tend to order the same few classics, while the rest of the items rarely get picked. That means a lot of ingredients for those forgotten dishes might just sit in the fridge for too long.

If I could make a suggestion—it would be to narrow down the menu. Pick the 25 most-ordered dishes and design a simple, easy-to-read menu with modern photos of each. Then, from those, select the 12 most popular for a focused lunch menu. That would make things more efficient for both the kitchen and the customer.

After placing my molcajete order, they brought out chips and salsa, which were really good—especially the red salsa. Amazing! While waiting, I went to wash my hands and check out the restroom area. That’s when I noticed something odd: the space next door is also being used by the restaurant. The dining room we were in was half the size of the one next door, but that second room was completely empty. There was even a bar with no bartender or customers. Maybe it was just the time of day, or maybe they only use it on weekends—but it felt strange to walk into such an empty area.

As for the bathrooms, they were painted a bright, sloppy mix of yellow and red, and not very clean. There was also a persistent, unpleasant odor that was hard to pinpoint. The bathroom looked clean at first glance, but the smell made it uncomfortable to stay in there.

Back at the table, I focused on my business meeting with a colleague and tried to enjoy the meal—and to be fair, the food was good. It was decent overall, and I especially loved the tortillas. So, points for that.

This place definitely has potential. Fix the menu, freshen up the décor, and embrace the charm of the historic building—and you’d have something really special here.

Excellent Mexican restaurant with great food and a welcoming atmosphere. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful, and the portions were generous for the price. The tacos were well seasoned, the enchiladas were delicious, and the salsa/chips were a great start to the meal.

Service was friendly and attentive, and the restaurant was clean and comfortable. Great value and a solid local spot—I’ll definitely be back.

This was my first visit to Hector y Amigos. The building is a great vibe with historic elements well preserved while showcasing a Mexican flair in the artwork and furnishings. My server was very polite and mostly attentive. The atmosphere was busy but not loud. I was a bit disappointed in my meal. It looked wonderful, but it lacked any noticeable flavor. Several parts of the meal also felt like it was purchased in instead of made fresh — salsa, tortillas, and guacamole most notably.

Man I wanted so bad to like this place. Everyone is nice but the chef must not have liked me asking for whatever I get to be not spicy.

Got home after picking it up and taste tested whatever was on top bc of how much pain I get when I get something spicy on my tongue

. (This isn’t normal I know and I just moved here from sf yesterday and was referred to a specialist I didn’t get to see so I’m going to find a clinic here).

Anyway so I call and offer to bring back the dish so they could see I didn’t t eat it. Turns out what was on top was spicy he told her in Spanish.

They remake it with the cheese that comes with the chips, which I had already tested at home and it has no spice whatsoever. I was very happy. I drove back home, opened up the burritos and I noticed there was a green salsa on top. ….

Now, like I said, I taste test everything before I just throw it in my mouth because I will literally have to spit it out. It hurts so bad on my tongue. She could tell on the phone because I couldn’t stop salivating. It was like gross.

I am trying to scrape it off(see photos) but at this point it feels intentional bc everyone told the chef no spicy. And when she opened it to me, try it I was specifically asked to try the cheese, so maybe everyone was in on it I have no idea.

The food here was great and I would recommend stopping here if you are close by. I ordered the 4 combination enchiladas and they were all delicious. Also a big plus in my book when a restaurant has complimentary chips, queso, and salsa. The service here was great with our server being very attentive. The manager also stopped by to check on us and he was quite friendly.

The food was superb. The salsa and queso were exquisite. Owner was super sweet and greets everyone that walks in. Bathrooms need some work but that’s the remotely negative thing I have about this place. Nachos were fantastic.
