It was a Thursday evening at 7pm. I had to walk through the dingy looking Evergreen parking into the sad lobby and then take the lift to the restaurant. The Golden Unicorn looked old and tired. The furnishings had their heyday back in the 80s. Only 2 tables were occupied.
The tablecloth was shredded along the edges and it had oil stains!!
I wanted to walk out but as I was quite hungry, decided to take the risk of staying. The waiter spoke to me in Chinese and we conversed about my order which I finally settled for:
Ha Gao (1/2 portion) and 1 seafood noodle soup.
Despite the aging and dilapidated decor the food was ok!
The shrimp in the Ha Gao was still crunchy. The noodle soup was light and somewhat bland. I had to add soy sauce and chilli oil. Honestly it wasn’t so bad! I would return but only if I have a couple of work colleagues with me so that I can sample other dishes.
But the whole building and restaurant gave out creepy vibes.

Place is not clean. It takes forever to get served. Waiters don’t pay attention to you. Most of them have a very bad attitude like they hate working there.

I was extremely disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. While eating my siu mai, I bit into a piece of metal that was embedded inside the dumpling. When I alerted the waitress, she casually said it was “probably from the cleaning wire brush” and simply walked away. No one came back to check on us, apologize, or address the safety issue.

I eventually had to get up and go to the front desk myself to find a manager. Only then did anyone take the situation seriously. The manager apologized, removed the siu mai from the bill, and offered a complimentary pork roll, but the damage was already done.

As for the food itself—nothing was good. Even basic dishes like spare ribs tasted worse than a simple homemade version. I only chose this place because it had a 4.4 rating and was a 3-minute walk from my hotel, but the quality was far below expectations. As someone Chinese who grew up with authentic dim sum, I can confidently say this does not meet dim sum standards in taste, quality, or safety.

Metal in food is a serious hazard, and the staff’s lack of urgency made it even more concerning. I would not recommend this restaurant.

P.S. I was so in shock I did not think of taking a picture of the metal. I gave it to the staff right away. But go at your own risk. -from a mother of a 1.9 years old and pregnant.

Best Peking duck in 10 years per my husband. Better than Los Angeles, Maryland, and New York. Duck is very lean, all meat, no bones, no fat. Salt & Pepper pork chop also very good, lean, no fat. Fried rice was also very good. We went on Christmas dinner.

We visited Golden Unicorn on a Sunday around 11:30am. Many items seemed to be our already (we tried to order with server, and was told many items we wanted were out). There were less people coming in and many table were available. We would suggest to go early and you may have more food items to choose from.

The pork we had had a funky taste/smell, not sure if it was just this batch had this smell or it came from the pork they sourced.

Overall, our experience was a meh, we would try dim sum at other places for better comparison.

Don’t know how this place has high reviews. Must be paid because the dim sum was horrible. We found a piece of metal while chewing and it was brushed off as part of a cleaning tool. Only good thing was that my toddler didn’t have that piece.

Panama standards are low but this place manages to be garbage. Don’t believe any of the positive reviews.

Walk around food carts. Pick out your pleasure and they heat up if needed. Don’t rush because there are like 100 choices and 6-8 difference carts. BUT dinged 1 star because my girlfriend, who is from Panama asked about an item 4 times and was finally told they don’t have it after saying yes they do. Buy otherwise great Brunch on Sunday. Good food.

Finally got a chance to try this place for brunch with some friends and so glad we did. The food is excellent, great selection of dim sum dishes, service is excellent, and a nice atmosphere and view if you take a window table. Highly recommended.

Impossible to find from the street, had to go through a parking garage with a random security guard to find it. The online menu in various places refers to many vegan products, among other assorted dumplings and buns. The menu we were given was very old, ripped, dirty and had nothing that the online sources quote. We showed the staff the online menu and they just said ‘no.’ I tried asking if they ever had it, or why it says vegan online, and they just sort of shrugged. Walked out very disappointed and confused. It also gives creepy and unsafe vibes for travelers, especially women. Avoid.

I had heard a tale of a Golden Unicorn deep in the heart of Panama City. Rumor had it that this was the best Chinese restaurant in all of Panama, possibly even Central America, or even the whole entire world. I had to try it. I traveled many miles to come to this restaurant today and sample its delicacies. I ordered the legendary wonton soup, some pork and veggie dumplings, and the Pork Ginger Scallion Lo Mein.

Hands down this is some of the best Chinese food I’ve ever had. I would come back to Panama just to bring my friends here. I was not prepared for the rich flavors, nutritious combinations, and generous portions that graced my plate.

Long live the Golden Unicorn!
