I ordered a dinner combination plate that included sweet‑and‑sour chicken, bbq pork ribs, moo goo gai pan, and pork fried rice with a bowl of hot & sour soup to start.

The hot & sour soup was a great opener: flavorful, balanced, and served piping hot. It set the tone for the rest of the meal.

The sweet‑and‑sour chicken came out crisp and bright, but the sauce had an odd flavor. The moo goo gai pan was fresh and tender, with a light savory sauce that didn’t overpower the vegetables. The BBQ pork fried rice had a nice flavor.

Portions were generous, the service was friendly, and the food arrived quickly. Golden Star feels like the kind of place locals rely on for a comforting, familiar meal.

If you’re in Astoria and craving classic Chinese comfort food, Golden Star is worth stopping in.

Blast from the past, old-school Chinese with the kind of meals I remember as a kid. My dining partner and I enjoyed our meals at the Golden Star. The lunch specials are pretty good-sized and fairly reasonable price-wise. The Hot and Sour Soup was delicious! I ordered the Cashew Chicken which had a ton of vegetables and liberal nuts mixed throughout the dish. She ordered the Chicken and Green Beans with BBQ Pork. Both dishes were very flavorful. Can’t say either one of us were a fan of the egg roll, though… Rather slimy inside and very very salty. Overall, though, tasty meals. (I’d skip the slots at the bar, however. Very stingy slots for the amount of $ and time we put in. Just saying… Go for the food).

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3.5/5)

**Old-school Chinese spot in Astoria** — nothing fancy about the menu, but the staff was accommodating when I mentioned I’m vegan. They went off-menu and made me a couple of custom dishes that hit the spot.

The **Kung Pao Tofu** was solid — I expected a little more kick since it’s a Sichuan dish, but it was flavorful and satisfying. The portion was huge (hello leftovers!) though a bit light on tofu, probably since the meat was swapped out. I added more spice and tofu at home, and it made for a great next-day meal.

The real standout was the **General Tso Tofu**, another off-menu creation they kindly prepared for takeout. The texture of the fried tofu was impressive — tender inside and the sauce had great balance.

All in all, I’d give Golden Star a **3.5 for food**, but extra points for the friendly service and willingness to accommodate vegan requests. I live over in **Long Beach, WA**, so it’s just a quick trip across the bridge — and yes, I’d definitely go back next time I’m in Astoria.

Golden star is literally the best Chinese food you can get and a reasonable price within 900 miles. I love them so much.

Best sweet and sour chicken of any restaurant I’ve ever had. (Portland and Seattle included). They always deliver when I need them too

First of all, I’m so sorry in advance for leaving this review. I never write reviews but I feel like I need to speak up about this. Saw the good reviews going through town and was craving Chinese food…

Ordered orange chicken, chow fun, and sechuan pork for take out. The sechuan pork was mostly lettuce and flavorless and soft… and the orange chicken might as well have been plain fried chicken with no flavor, even with the “sauce” on the side. Panda Express’ orange chicken is actually 10x better. I also asked for hot oil to add some spice and I think they literally gave me grease from a pan.

Again, I feel awful typing this. The guy at the front taking our order was very nice. I am thoroughly disappointed in the food.

Old school Chinese restaurant. We stopped in for lunch, they had a few tables filled. Server was friendly and a little nervous, she explained that she had just started this job. We both ordered combo plates and had a small order of fried shrimp to split. Pork fried rice was good, with enough pieces of bbq pork and not too much soy sauce, sweet and sour pork was a little over cooked. The sechwaun beef was god with just the right amount of heat, but maybe a little heavy on the cabbage? Fried shrimp was hot and crispy.
Overall good experience, we will return.

Nice cozy place with good food
The best Chinese food we’ve found in Astoria so far (and there aren’t that many choices).
This restaurant is a bit hard to find if it weren’t for Google Maps and Reviews. We would never have come here if it weren’t for the reviews and pictures on Maps
We’ll definitely come back here!
Good food.
