Social Profile:

Fidel’s Little Mexico has been a San Diego landmark since the early ’60s when owner Fidel Montanez came up with the idea to serve tacos at his busy barber shop. The shop was located in the heart of Eden Gardens, a small neighborhood in Solana Beach that was home to a number of Mexican families. The tacos sold like hotcakes, and before long, the place evolved into a neighborhood cantina. The business thrived and expanded as Fidel converted his two-story residence into three different levels, including a festive courtyard, a couple of bars and outdoor patios, and a taco bar. Today, Fidel’s ranks among the top restaurants in San Diego County. Happy hour is offered four days a week in the large upstairs bar. Fidel’s menu offers traditional f

Fish tacos, chiles rellenos, margaritas & more Mexican fare in a colorful, hacienda-style space.

Less is more should be the take away. Too much cheese on everything. I want better food not more.
Arrive and you have to walk thru the building down stairs and it’s quite weird but whatever. We get seated outside due to that was first available. It’s cold out but there is a heater. They were pretty busy but slowing down. The food took almost an hour for soup, one fish taco and I got the combo relleno and Carnitas Burrito. Burrito meat was good, relleno is cheese only and too much of it. Beans were tasty but most of it covered in cheese. Salsas were pretty good. Tortilla chips were ok. Would not go back, one and done for me.

This is the Mexican restaurant next-door to Tony’s Jacal. We wanted Tony’s, but because the wait was 180 minutes at 5pm, we went next door and were seated, as there was no wait. The staff is great. But the food was very sloppy. I brought my family of 5 and the overuse of dripping wet lettuce made each plate of dinner a mess. All the food tasted fine, but at an average of $23+ a plate (not including tax and tip). I don’t want my food to look like a fast food place run by minors. The salsa had no love, just thin and lacking the taste you’d expect of salsa. Honest mistake, as all three drinks were clear, but our cocktails were mixed up, that only turns into a big deal if someone at your table orders the Mezcal! (Yuck surprise!)

I’ve come to this restaurant many times which is why this experience was disappointing.

During this visit, the dish I ordered wasn’t what I expected. I politely let our waiter, Fabian, know and apologized while asking if it would be possible to switch to something else. From that moment on, his demeanor noticeably changed. The interaction became cold and dismissive.

When the replacement dish came out, it was simply placed on the table without a word. I said “thank you,” but received no response. After that, it felt like our table was being avoided. We had trouble getting his attention and he wouldn’t make eye contact when walking by.

Situations like this are uncomfortable because no one wants to feel like they’ve done something wrong for politely speaking up about their food. I completely understand that mistakes happen and that not every dish will be a perfect fit. The way it’s handled makes all the difference.

It’s unfortunate because we come here often, but after this experience we’ll likely be heading over to Tony Jacal’s next door, where the service has always felt more welcoming and consistent.

The consistency at Fidel’s is unmatched. I’ve been coming to Fidel’s whenever I’m in San Diego for over two decades and I have always had an extremely pleasant experience with the staff and the food is always the same. It’s always nice biting into delicious nostalgia. The same burrito I devoured when I was seven is still the same delicious burrito I’m devouring at 27. The only difference being I’m drinking a Perfect Margarita (the name and an accurate description) instead of a Shirley temple.

The more traditional style Mexican food, a little pricey for how basic it is but the size of the food is great!. It’s always very crowded so it seems to be enjoyed by everyone! The salsa kind of tastes like tomato sauce with some seasoning, but the food itself was pretty good. The green sauce is excellent and spicy! The chicken enchiladas had so much shredded chicken breast it was awesome, but there was no cheese inside these enchiladas which I thought was strange. Still good though with lots of extra green sauce. We also got the tacos and they were massive and very crunchy.

I had a rather disappointing experience at this Mexican restaurant. We’re used to generous portions and cheesy Mexican food, but this place was overpriced and left me feeling unsatisfied. The Crab Enchilada was a total letdown. Only one came with the $20 plate, and the cheese was practically non-existent. The $10 shrimp taco had a measly 5-6 tiny shrimp in it. The Milanesa chicken dish could have been much better with a sauce. Overall, the flavors were just okay, and the parking was a nightmare. The restrooms were also in poor condition. Despite the fun decor and lively atmosphere, I wouldn’t recommend this place.

Definitely a five star experience. From the beginning, the complimentary salsa was was super tasty and the tacos were fresh. They even offered refills! My house Margarita was perfectly made. We ordered the combo plates. I had the Chile Releno and Chicken Burrito. The Releno was perfectly cooked and melted in your mouth. The chicken Taco was filled with chicken and quite filling. Best tasting Mexican rice and beans I have ever had. Great experience and super friendly service. Would definitely come back!

We dined Nextdoor a couple of times and decided to try this place. I wish we hadn’t. The food was just average. The service was pretty good. However, he got my wife’s order wrong. The atmosphere is rustic and I wish we had sat outside.

We ordered the guacamole side 4.5/5, chicken torta 3/5 (massive), asada burrito 3/5. The house margarita was good for a house version 5/5.

my friends are I were surfing Cardiff and wanted some Mexican food afterwards and my friend recommended this place. I did not know what to expect, but there ambience was adorable! A classic Mexican style vibe, colorful from head to toe. They have 2 levels, including an outdoor patio on the bottom level. We ordered a variety of dishes. I went with the classic surf and turf and it did not disappoint. if you’re looking for a cute and tasty quality Mexican restaurant, I highly recommend this place!

My husband ordered carnitas and I had a chicken tostada and a Mexican hot chocolate. The hit chocolate was the only good thing. The tostada had no beans on it and the chicken was bland. Will not be returning. Oh and the jalapeño poppers were gross. Sorry.
