*cash only* Phenomenal dog. I’m on the hunt to find my favorite Chicago dog, and while we’re only about 5 restaurants deep into our list so far, this is at the top of my list so far. The location itself is small, with minimal parking options, but worth the effort. The staff were nice and quick with the order. This is a garden dog, cucumber instead of pickle. Everything was fresh, the dog had great flavor and snap. Everything was balanced. If you want sport peppers, you just have to ask. My only deduction, really, is no fries option. I can completely understand why they wouldn’t have a fryer in that tiny stall, but still.

Absolutely 10/10 hot dog! Prices even better. Great beginning to a weekend Chicago trip. Highly recommend! Street parking and cash only.

Hot dogs are the best ever. The fact they use long slices of cucumber and fresh wedges of tomato instead of little chopped onions makes for the finesse of this great Chicago hog dog. Plus the hot dog itself tastes better than anywhere.

Fat Johnnie’s is a true Chicago classic! I tried the Mother-in-Law (tamale on a hot dog bun with chili) and it was absolutely delicious—messy, hearty, and full of flavor. The hot dogs here are fantastic too, with that perfect snap and plenty of toppings to choose from. It’s a no-frills spot with tons of character, and the staff were quick and friendly. A must-visit if you want to experience authentic Chicago street food at its best!

Absolutely delicious, a true Chicago hotspot. I absolutely love the original classic look of a hot dog stand. I highly recommend stopping here and getting a red hot. Best hot dog. The staff was extremely friendly. They did have several umbrella covered picnic tables to sit at which was really nice..we drove a little over 20 miles to get here. Street parking is available obviously first come first serve just watch out for signs posted on when there is absolutely no parking. I was there today and sign posted no parking Wednesday from 9-2 probably when they street sweep. But this place is an absolute gem. I will definitely be back more.

Best Chicago style hotdogs. We were big fans of the selection. If you are visiting from out of town this is one place to try. I didn’t notice anywhere to sit, you get your hotdog and keep moving with your day. We’ll stop by again next time we’re in Chicago.

Best Chicago style hot dog in the city. And their Chili is fantastic too! I’ve tried so many other hot dogs, and they are always and consistently the best and freshest.

As a continuation with eats from “Made in Chicago: Stories Behind 30 Great Hometown Bites”, my next stop was Fat Johnnies but NOT for The Mother In Law (as stated in the book) but rather the Mighty Dog. This is essentially the MIL but add a hotdog and cheese (to the tamale & chili on a bun dragged through the garden).
This will be a preference to corn rolled tamales. Personally, the tamale gave it a gritter and drier taste in my mouth which is a carb redundacy with the bun. However, the red hot had snap and was super tasty and salty. Overall, I would prefer the standard Chicago dog (sans the cucumber).
Nonetheless, the quality of food is high while prices are suprisingly low. This small shack is only take-out and CASH ONLY. I believe the owner works the line and was very friendly. I will try their regular dog another day.

This is the best restaurant on the face of the earth. John, Teddy (rest in peace) and the history they’ve made to make the city what it is.
