I wanted to love this place, but it was very mediocre. The tacos were not great, I honestly couldn’t even finish one of them. The chips were stale, and the salsa was very underwhelming for a Mexican restaurant. The service was bad, and there was a long wait for our food, despite us being the only people in the restaurant when we first came in. (That should have been our sign to go somewhere else). However, the Margaritas were good which made the experience slightly better.

Really good Mexican food. The portions are ENORMOUS for the price and the staff was SUPER friendly!

I had the 3 meat fajita and asked them to separate the chicken/steak/pork which they did. The chips and salsa was great too. They asked multiple times if I need more chips and salsa, and the drink refills were quick.

Definitely coming back here!

Hands down the best Mexican food in town! They have the favorites that others do not, and do it very well! The fresh salsa is excellent!

As a local resident of South Bend with a background in the service industry, I wanted to share my recent experiences at El Rancho Viejo. Although the restaurant shows potential, my visits have been disappointing due to issues with service and management.

On July 25th, my sister and I stopped by for drinks after work. My sister’s margarita was okay, but not exceptional. I appreciated the variety of vegetarian options on the menu, which made us consider returning for a meal.

The next day, I decided to try the food to-go. The service was quick, and my burrito was large and satisfying. Unfortunately, I found an avocado peel inside, but I chose not to complain at the time.

However, during my visit on August 3rd, things took a turn for the worse. My friend and I were seated promptly, and while our server was attentive initially, problems arose at checkout. I had mentioned my previous issue with the avocado peel and asked for reassurance about the order. Despite this, my bill was charged incorrectly at $17.25 instead of the $11.25 I expected. The manager’s response was dismissive and unprofessional. He was visibly agitated, didn’t introduce himself, and ignored our concerns. Although the issue was partially corrected with a $4 discount, the final bill still wasn’t right.

As someone who values community and respect, I found the lack of genuine concern and care disheartening. While the food has potential, the poor customer service has overshadowed the experience. I hope the management takes this feedback seriously and improves their approach. Until then, I’ll be looking for dining options where respect and professionalism come first.

Thank you.

Fast, friendly, fresh…those are the words I would use to describe my visit. I went on a Monday afternoon for lunch by myself. My server seated me right away and was super attentive and polite the whole time. He was on top of it. The food cane out fast, but it was nice and hot. Would totally come back again.

A great choice for Mexican food and ambiance. Plus the portions are big.
I ordered the pick two and had a tamal and beef taco. The beef taco shell was hard which wouldn’t have been my preference but the flavor of the meat was wonderful. The tamal was decent but I probably wouldn’t order that again, nothing beats fresh ones.

My husband ordered a shrimp dish and it was so flavorful. The shrimp were cooked well and the sauce wash delicious.

We also had a small and medium margarita. One was a classic with Jose Cuervo gold and the other a mango. They both were good but we preferred the classic lime.

We got seated right away. The place was pretty empty. Only my wife and I plus 2 guys at the bar in the whole restaurant. Food came out pretty fast. Food was not as good as the other Rancho Viejo on grape road. Plus our waitress wasn’t very attentive. We never received refills on any of our drinks or asked if we wanted any. When we did finish our food it took the waitress almost 25 min to bring our check. She was more concerned about the guys at the bar than us. I don’t know if it’s because we weren’t drinking or not. That shouldn’t be a reason for less than service.

Stopped in here on a whim as I was walking to another establishment. I am so glad I did!! The food was amazing! I had the Mucho Grande Burito and a Mudello Especial. Average price. The portion was huge. I needed to stop eating and take it to go, but it was so good I ate it all. Worth it! The carved booths and chairs added character to the atmosphere of Latin music. Highly recommend to stop in.
