On my families first trip to Houston we struggled to find many spots that were special that we couldn’t get where we came from, but we found El Pobre and couldn’t have wished for anything different! The reviews online don’t lie by any means, this is definitely a must have when stopping in Houston! Alfredo and his mother have so much hospitality and love, and they know how to COOK. We got the brisket quesadilla, the brisket grilled cheese sandwich, the churros, a brisket taco and fries, it all was 10-20 dollars per person, and the prices are reflected incredibly well for the amount of food you get and how delicious it is. The service was wonderful, the foods super affordable, shareable AND it was made rather quickly and HOT too. We split it among four people and we still had left overs! DEFINITELY a must try when in the area.

I got the brisket burger and it was very stuffed and juicy, I would highly recommend and get again.
The quesadilla had nice flavoring to the meat with the herbs. The salsa included were very yummy and not super spicy in my standards.
Fries are awesome and should always get some whenever you are here. 10/10

This place is such a hidden gem. Yes some of the stuff is a little expensive, however, a single brisket taco can fill you up! Add a beer from equal parts and you always leave satisfied. I always go for the brisket quesadilla and I always get 2 full meals out of it. All of their meats are great but in my opinion the brisket is nearly the best in the city so I always go back for it.

Just moved from Sioux City, IA and this spot seriously impressed me. The brisket grilled cheese is hands down the best I’ve ever had — super tender, smoky, cheesy, and just all-around amazing.
The Tex-Mex BBQ vibe makes it really unique and honestly one of the most interesting places I’ve tried since moving. Definitely a place I’ll be coming back to. Highly recommend

The food at El Pobre is outstanding! I’ve been a fan for almost 8 years. The portion size is huge and the food quality is top notch! You definitely get your money’s worth. I highly recommend the brisket quesadilla or the wagyu burger. Delicious!

I stumbled on this hidden gem after wedding. Even though I was full from the wedding, but when I saw the brisket grilled cheese sandwich came out… I just had to get one. And it did not disappoint!! What a phenomenal sandwich!!! It was cooked to perfection. The owner Alfredo and his mother was very kind as well. Spent a few minutes just chit chatting with them. My hometown (Orlando) can’t do it right like them. Some by and try some for yourself, promise you will love it!

I came in town all the way from Wichita, Kansas just to try this spot in Houston, TX—and it did not disappoint. The grilled cheese was next-level: perfectly crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. The homemade green hot sauce really set it apart—fresh, tangy, and the perfect amount of heat to balance the richness of the cheese. Simple comfort food done absolutely right. Worth the trip.

Guy I spoke to was very upfront that my order would take some time. I was hungry but I knew I wasn’t ordering fast food. It was ready before I knew it and I was pleasantly surprised. That brisket grilled cheese was ridiculously good. Probably the best I’ve ever had. Definitely want more!

I really enjoyed the grilled cheese brisket sandwich. The brisket was soft, and the cheese was melted to perfection. The homemade sauces were good as well. I will definitely comeback here to try their other dishes.
