6/12/24—I hadn’t planned on apartment hunting, but when my friend called me in distress about her mother’s health back in Guatemala , I decided to take her out to eat because she was stressed out, had barely eaten all day, and I hoped to distract her from what was going on., I decided on El Paisano Guatemalan restaurant I’d been eyeing for years. It was a little after 4 PM when we arrived, the sun casting a gentle glow through the window, giving the place a warm, welcoming feel.
The restaurant, a cozy yet spacious spot with views of the bustling street and the trees beyond, had always intrigued me. Today, with friends mind preoccupied, I hoped the familiar flavors might provide some comfort. As we walked in, I noticed a few men at the bar. The music, although a bit loud, had moments of silence that were oddly soothing.
We found a seat by the window, allowing the natural light to set a calm tone for our meal. The cleanliness of the place was immediately apparent, and there were plenty of seats available. It was not busy at all so that was great !
My friend ordered the chicken soup, which arrived with a side of rice and separate pieces of chicken. I decided on the beef soup. While we waited, I sipped on my coffee. They didn’t have decaf, so I added milk to my coffee to temper the caffeine hit – not my usual preference, but it was still enjoyable and definitely not instant coffee.
The soups arrived in about 15 minutes, a reasonable wait that allowed us to catch up. I tasted the broth of my friends chicken soup – it was rich and flavorful. My beef soup was excellent, the depth of the flavors testament to the freshness of the ingredients. They brought us tortillas, and although I’m not a huge fan, I found myself reaching for a second one. They were good, soft and perfect for dipping.
My friends Jamaica drink was a pleasant surprise – not too sweet, just as she liked it. We noted that there were no desserts on the menu, which was a bit of a letdown but understandable given the focus on savory dishes.
As we finished our meal, I reflected on the prices. At $17 a soup, it was pricier than I was used to, but the quality justified the cost. Thelma, our server, was cordial and provided excellent service, adding to the overall positive experience.
As we left, I felt a sense of satisfaction. Despite the circumstances of our visit, the restaurant had offered a brief respite from my friends worries, and the food had been a delightful exploration of Guatemalan cuisine. Of all the Guatemalan restaurants I’ve tried, this one stood out for its freshness and authenticity. It may not be an everyday dining spot, but it’s certainly one I’d recommend for a special treat.
It was charming to be served coffee in a red cup adorned with Christmas decorations, signaling it was Christmas in June. All we needed was some snow, and I’d feel like I was somewhere in New Hampshire! We both chuckled! , it felt like a little bit of holiday cheer had been sprinkled into our day. The unexpected festivity in the middle of June was exactly the distraction we needed.

Really good food. The only reason I didn’t give more stars is because of the language barrier… nobody there speaks much English, so trying to order was not great for my English only speaking family.

.. you must try the orchata . You must put not less than $30 in your pocket per person to eat this food with no alcohol..
.the bad think is the parking it is small and we have to park on some one else parking lot. And you have to deal with some people drinking alcohol ,talking loudly and no one from the restaurant says nothing about it…

Just stopped in to get a couple drinks. The micheladas are GREAT!!! The place is nice and clean. The staff was very friendly. It’s a nice little hidden gem of a bar/restaurant. I can’t wait to stop back in when I’m actually hungry and try the food.
The wait staff doesn’t seem to speak a lot of English, mostly Spanish. But they are very friendly and it was still a pleasure to order, regardless of the minor language barrier.

Overpriced and food quality was not worth the cost. Lunch took a long time to come to the table and the food was cold. Service was not good. Much better options available for Guatemalan food in Rhode Island.

Bad service overall. I went with my family and we waited more then an hour for our food. Also, the waitress came to our table just once. Food was nit great either. Overall just a bad experience. Not going back there again.
