Wow!!!! This place was amazing!! From the chips n salsa to the michelada! EVERYTHING was sooo delicious! We travel, and to find such a great restaurant with good atmosphere, good food, good service, good EVERYTHING, is very rare, our food came out so quickly, the waitor Heriberto, was so good to us! This was just an amazing experience, we definitely will be back when we come through again!

12/22/26. Check this monster out! Burrito Chipotle. Steak, shrimp, rice and beans on the inside. A nice helping of chorizo on the outside. Delicious. What!!!? $10.99. Yeah!
It’s not hard to figure out why Ismael and his staff continue to position El Azteca as the top Mexican restaurant from Doswell down to Glen Allen. His staff is well above average… they hustle… remember those days? It’s refreshing.
Decor could use an upgrade. I am told that it is already being planned.
Menus at El Azteca are updated to meet customer demands regularly. Just check out the dinner specials as you enter the restaurant. Or check out their Mea/Facebook page: “El Azteca Ashland”.
Tonight I had seafood on the brain and they delivered big time. Off menu special. Salmon, asparagus, green beans, broccoli, mushrooms, avocado… yikes!! The salmon was cooked perfectly. They also prepare this delicious plate with two chicken breasts. I usually travel to Richmond to find half of what was on my plate tonight. Of course, if you arrived at El Azteca with Mexican cuisine on the brain… you are definitely in the right place.
I shouldn’t have, but after a brief description of their new signature dessert, I had to risk total food coma. In Puerto Rico we call it flancocho. It’s a layer of flan resting on a rich vanilla or chocolate cake. Absolutely decadent. Go Ashland!!!

The combo food was very bad. We ordered the grilled shrimp taco. It was extremely bland for a Mexican restaurant. And when we said that to the server he just shrugged it off. The complimentary nachos and dip were the only dish we actually enjoyed. Then there was an error in the bill and the server argued over it when we were not wrong.

El Azteca Mexican restaurant is the best in Ashland. I didn’t have to go far from my hotel. It’s convenient to major streets. Food was delicious to our likings. Service was really genuine. I would return.

We have eaten at El Azteca since moving here in 2012. At that time the kids were little. The wait staff would always let us order things differently so the picky eaters could get what they wanted.
Now they get the regular meals and eat their fill…and eat chips and salsa by the bowl full.
The food is consistently good. The wait staff is great…many of them have watched our kids grow and stop by to say hello. We have watched many of the wait staff grow as well, lol (maybe I grow too, but I don’t notice).
There is lots of space and they accomodate large parties easily and do a great job accomodating kids without disturbance to guests without kids who want a quiet relaxed meal.

In my opinion, not much to brag about. Just your normal mexican restaurant. I had a lunch chorri pollo with extra flower tortillas and it was kind of a let down. I dont know of any other places that put about half an onion in it. But I’ll give it a shot again if in in the area.

Walking in, the atmosphere was welcoming and vibrant. The decor was lively and everything was clean. The waiter showed up immediately and quickly brought back our drinks and chips w/ salsa. Salsa a little watery but good flavor. The food showed quickly and was impeccable! Perfectly grilled, well seasoned, just fantastic. This was our first visit but we will definitely be returning!
