I finally had a chance to try out DeeDee’s Thai food truck in Astoria, Oregon. I’ve been eye balling the trucks in this little corner across from the Portway for a while, and was finally able to actually stop and try some food!

Treated visiting family to a meal. It was not a treat! Our Chicken Pad Thai was dry and tasteless. Virtually no sauce whatsoever. I was left wondering, Where’s the Sauce??!!

The food at this cart is like one of those medieval illuminated manuscripts where a monk tries to draw a horse, but it is clear he hasn’t seen a horse in a very long time or maybe ever. I have tried them three times, each time hoping the last experience was a fluke and each one has been, like, just wildly and inexplicably bad. Pad See Ew is my go-to Thai dish, defined by wide noodles cooked in dark soy sauce that caramelizes under high heat. The noodles from Dee Dee consistently arrive as a single pale lump, barely cooked, sauce nowhere to be found. My partner’s pad Thai has been equally perplexing, with the only flavor coming from the lime squeezed on top. To be clear, I want this cart to be good! I love Thai noodles and my neighborhood deserves good food that doesn’t come from a bar or a drive thru. My sincere hope is that the employees aren’t trained correctly or that there has been some horrible misunderstanding about how to make these dishes and whoever is in charge will realize and fix it, but life is hard enough without holding onto hope for good noodles; they may never come.
