Service was spectacular! But food was not.
I ordered the original chicken sandwich.
The bun was essentially barren and room temperature, unnoticeable toasted or toasted.
Chicken was not crispy or juicy or warm really.
The Hush Puppies are really good!!!!
Fries are not crispy, and are potato forward. I respect it.
The ranch was liquidy but also seemingly “real” and not just nasty Heinz slop. Had a more gourmet taste.
Blue cheese sauce was acceptable.
The black unsweetened tea tasted like I actually brewed it, which is better than a lot of places can do.
Mac sauce was more ketchup forward than other “classic chicken place sauces.”
BBQ sauce is viscous and quite sweet. Has some spice.
As good as Chicken Max is, there’s always some room for improvement. Here are 2 things I wish they would change:
1) Making sure their delicious thick, soft bread is toasted. I’ve eaten there many times and my bread is always barely toasted and has no butter flavor (if there is butter on it it’s too light. I can’t taste it!). Look at Canes, their toasted bread is awesome, always well buttered & toasted consistently. Chick N Max toast is very similar if not identical to Canes, just needs more butter & toasting done to it to really make it excellent. Customers will actually come back just for delicious toasted bread, so please make sure your toast is always actually toasted and has butter on it or at the least, please offer butter on the side.
2) I do love Chicken Max’s potato salad and the hard boiled eggs in it really make it special! I am a huge deviled egg lover and have made them for every holiday for years. I always add sweet pickle relish to my deviled eggs and it really makes them tasty. Would love their potato salad even more if they added sweet pickle relish. Just my opinion. Thanks!
Sandwich-wise, the Loaded Bama combines salty and sweet perfectly, and the Smoked Chicken BLT impresses with its smoky aroma and flavor.
Moving to the sides, the coleslaw is uniquely sweet, and the Devil Egg Potato Salad is a hit for those averse to strong mustard. Onion rings are flavorful but may require careful eating.
Ending on a sweet note, the Chocolate Chip Cookie tastes just like a homemade treat.
Highly recommended for a quick, satisfying meal.
If you’re craving something sweet, definitely get the chicken and waffle. The chicken bama is also pretty tasty.
I’d come back for more to try other flavors for sure. 10/10 highly recommended.
Highly recommend the sweet and spicy just as it is.
The fries were fresh and well seasoned.
I’ll be back for sure!
The food? A bit of a mixed review. Prices are not too bad, actually cheaper than I expected. I got the Nashville Hot which I have had at several restaurants… this one was one of the better ones. The best one I’ve ever had is at the Test Kitchen in Minneapolis, if you’re ever in the area, try it… it’s next level amazing and they offer 4 spice levels!!
Unfortunately, I also got the Smoked Chicken Wings. Those were NOT good. They had absolutely no flavor, not even a grain of salt. The “smoke” flavor was more like a burnt ash flavor. I kid you not, my hands smelled like I was there smoking cigarettes all night after touching them. Luckily, the smoke was not very penetrating as far as the chicken goes and the Ghost Pepper Sauce gave them flavor and made them edible. Really really good flavored sauce but “Ghost Pepper” insinuates it’s going to have some heat, it had no heat at all… disappointing.
The sides might have been the best part of the meal. Potato Salad, Mac & Cheese, and Mashed Potatoes were all very good.
Unfortunately, the wife and kid said they’d not go back. The Nashville Hot was a good sandwich and there were a lot of things on the menu that looked very appetizing so I might go back for a work meal and give them a second chance. It’s a new enough restaurant that they might still be trying to find their nitch, I’m not ready to completely give up on them yet but I definitely won’t be ordering the wings again.
First experience was exactly the same.
You’ve lost a customer. There are so many other restaurants in town that do it right.
