Great vibe in middle of Carytown. Bagels are delicious, seating area is clean, cool artwork and nice servers. The coffee options include expressos but limited if you want to customize. But for bagels, their core business, there’s many different sourdough flavors and many smears! Be ready to wait in line due to long queues, so it’s best to order in advance on app!

The espresso and the cold brew were great. (I could only wish the cold brew used cold brew ice cubes) Bagels seemed fresh and yummy. It was spacious inside. The people who worked there seemed nice and helpful.

Be ready for a wait…in fact the line was outside the store at about 9am on a Saturday. Note to self, get there earlier. But it was a worth the wait. I got in to order pretty quickly but waited a bit to get my bagel with cream cheese. I took it home to eat with a nice fresh mug of nespresso roasted hazel nut coffee and I was not disappointed. The sourdough plain bagel was tasty and loaded with cream cheese. Luckily, I had bought a second bagel, so took the extra cream cheese from the first bagel, and spread it on the second! Parking was available in the parking lot when I got there, but as I left, the lot was totally packed so get there before 9am!

Chewy’s does make very good bagels, that’s the reason I’ve continued to come back. Unfortunately, the customer service has been consistently poor, and after multiple experiences, it’s hard to justify returning.
There’s an ongoing attitude here that customers are inconveniences rather than people being served. It often feels like they’re doing you a favor simply by allowing you to order.
Two experiences stand out:
On one visit, my mother was dealing with a medical issue and urgently needed to eat. We arrived while the store was still open, with about 10 minutes until closing. Even after calmly explaining the situation, we were refused service outright. I understand boundaries around closing time, but there was zero compassion or flexibility shown.
Most recently, I was purchasing a dozen bagels and noticed pre-bagged bulk bagels in plastic bags off to the side. Since I was traveling and needed the bagels to stay fresh for a couple of days, I asked if mine could be placed in those same bags. The first cashier was kind and said yes. Then another employee stepped in (green hair) and made several unnecessary side comments about how “they don’t do that” and how the bags “wouldn’t keep them fresher anyway.” The tone was dismissive and uncomfortable, especially considering I was spending a significant amount of money and simply asking for a reasonable accommodation.
It’s disappointing because the product is good — but good bagels don’t excuse consistently poor, unfriendly service. I want to support local businesses, but being treated like an annoyance makes that difficult.

Bagels are a highly debated topic here in Richmond. “This place does this, this place does that” etc etc etc. In my experience, which is a few years in New York City, and having baked professionally, I can firmly say Chewy’s bagels are the best bagels I’ve had in my entire life. The crust on the outside, the soft centers. The consistency on their bagels is great too. The only negative I could say is they sell out early and they have a line early, but the line goes quickly. Their bagels are the star of the show, but I have also enjoyed their breakfast sandwiches.

Very solid bagel place. They are not stingy on the cream cheese either. The everything bagel was very good and the prices were fair. I would recommend getting there early because the line gets long. They also have free water for those who dine in. I liked Chewy’s a lot

Some of the best bagels in RVA! I haven’t been here since they opened a few years ago, and I think I’ll have to be switching up the bagel rotation to include Chewy’s.
I read some of these other reviews – and the complaints about them closing an hour early or running out of bagels is kind of absurd… don’t you want a place that’s so great that they run out of their food? I do. Nobody in RVA complains about ZZQ closing early, this is the same thing.
FOOD: Ham and Swiss on Sesame is absolutely a stunner. It was ham and swiss with caramelized onions, fig jam – and just hit right home on the notes. I just wish there was a bit more of the ham and cheese in there.
Got the classic bagel with plain cream cheese – not toasted, as this is the only consistent way to judge a bagel joint. The bagel is… chewy (not in a bad way), and has a light touch of sourdough flavor – LOVED IT. Cream cheese was awesome – but next time I’ll be more adventurous as they have some banger flavors like pimento or scallion.
Ordered coffee as well – and the prices are really really fair and they have a full espresso machine. Great coffee too!
ATMOSPHERE:
It should be obvious… go earlier than rush hour. 10am on a Saturday may sound like a great idea, but for a great spot like this (or really any breakfast spot in RVA) – don’t. 8:30am was nearly empty, service was quick. Lots of places to sit and eat – which is a huge plus.
OVERALL:
This has been an underrated Carytown spot hiding in plain sight. It’s not a NY bagel, but it’s really great in a different way.

This bagel shop was so good it honestly blew my mind. Local gems like this are what are making Richmond such an appealing place to live right now. I got the egg and cheese sandwich and added bacon jam to it. The price blew my mind, it was something like $7. Maybe my price perceptions just got blown into outer space from living in Seattle for four years but I’ve definitely payed double that for a bagel sandwich half as good. The shop is cute and has a good little bit of seating but it definitely gets packed with how popular it is. The one thing I’d say is that the coffee was pretty mid. It’s understandable given the fact that their specialty is the bagels and the staff is packed with bagel orders and coffee isn’t the priority, but I’d almost recommend grabbing coffee at another shop in Carytown and then coming in here for a bagel. I was obsessed with this place and will definitely come back. Also I have no comment on the bagel regional style debate. It did what a bagel needs to do imo.

Great place to get fresh-made bagels. Great variety of bagels as well as creme cheeses. Everything looks to be made in house.
I got the Breakfast Sammie with Bacon Jam on an Everything bagel. Flavor was good. I didn’t know that the bacon jam added much to the sandwich. Next time I’ll probably get it without the jam. Then again, the next time I’ll probably try something else.

Amazing bagels that can compete with NYC! The vegan cheese cheeses (plain annd chive) are delicious and the vegan cranberry orange muffin to die for! The sourdough rosemary bagel is so unique and delicious. My husband commutes weekly to D.C. and this is now going to be a dedicated stop for take away home to NC. Thanks for having so many great vegan options!
