I’ve been meaning to get in here for a few years now. Lunch the other day was the perfect opportunity.
I sat at the counter and they were very welcoming. I had a great conversation with one of the owners and learned we have a mutual connection. Really nice folks and everyone working there seemed to be in a good mood even though it was a somewhat dreary day. Great service too.
Based on the weather, I went for the chili & grilled cheese special. Norbert (the other owner) makes it from scratch and it’s a little different than the chili I make at home. More vegetable variety and some large chunks to make them easy to identify. Good flavor but no noticeable spice or heat. I asked for onions on the side and they brought me a nice little container of diced onions.
The grilled cheese needs it’s own paragraph. It was made as soon as I ordered and chose the bread. They are bringing in fresh bread from a local bakery and I went with pumpernickel rye. Fortunately, it tastes way better than it photographs. They use a couple of different types of cheese and cook it open-face on the flat top. Once ready to serve, they flip side A onto side B and cut it in half. Killer grilled cheese.
There’s a lot more of their menu that I need to explore and I’m looking forward to grilling some of the fresh brats that Norbert sells out of a couple of coolers in the dining room. Pretty sure one of those briskets is going to come home with me as well.

Excellent diner and meat shop. The Strammer Max is my favorite. They offer German coffee, which is strong and smooth. There is an all you can eat breakfast buffet, and the food is off the chain. Very German influnced as the co-owner is from Germany and also the butcher for the meat shop. The German gravy for the biscuits is delicious. We bought prime rib from the meat shop and threw them in the grill. They were very delicious. The place is very busy on the weekend. Staff are great and friendly.

Amazing German food, American food, Breakfast and lunch served until 1 pm. Friendly environment, kind server’s. I would recommend going there daily if you want excellent service and food in Chetek for breakfast amd lunch.

I highly recommend the weekend breakfast buffet. Biscuits and gravy are so good, the breakfast sausage was so delicious I had to buy some to take home! They also had a few delicious pastries, light, flaky dough! The German coffee was also amazing, picked up some to go.

Love this place. It has all the ambience you would expect from a diner from years gone by. A little piece of small town Americana. I ordered the Black Forest Omelette. Everything was prepared impeccably. The omelet, the hash browns, and the rye toast with butter, were amazing. I haven’t had a restaurant breakfast this good in many years. My wife ordered the Strammer Max. What one might think is a strange combination of flavors was delicious. Rye toast topped with grilled summer sausage, 3 eggs and pickles, with some spicy brown mustard added, was a surprisingly tasty combo. Definitely try it. Could not say enough good things about the service. Christine was so friendly and attentive. You definitely must visit this cafe.

I stopped at the Chetek Cafe under the recommendation of a local friend. The service was great and the food was even better. I got the Bavarian steak breakfast which I was unable to finish due to the generous serving size(pictured below after I mixed up the dish).
If your in a hurry this isn’t the place to go. But not do to a lack of service or slow kitchen staff but instead due to how busy they are because the food is so dang good.

Excellent authentic German food. Tried the breakfast buffet and my wife got the pork steak breakfast. Both were amazing. Our servers(multiple helped) were excellent!

We went to the Chetek Cafe with fairly low expectations; we wanted to try something new and somewhat local.
Food: I ordered the “gyro” which is by no means a gyro as it’s pork. If you’re willing to overlook that inaccurate name for the sandwich it is actually legitimately delicious. The meat was well seasoned, tender, and juicy. It was, to quote my husband “a surprisingly high quality of meat.” It was also a fairly large size pita sandwich; I had ordered it as a basket and it was served on an actual platter– huge.
Service: Very casual vibes from staff but our waitress was super attentive; very prompt with refills. Everything you could ask for from a small town diner in terms of hospitality.
Atmosphere: The building is getting on in age and the booths are small. Some seats at the counter are ripped and the color scheme of the interior is very mid 90s roadside diner, complete with taxidermied fowl in the window. If that’s your thing, you’re gonna love it. If you wanted more formal dining, you may feel put off.
Overall the food was well above average. Go out of your way to visit this place it’s a nice value for the amount of food you receive

Went in at 10:30 on a Sunday morning after a short vacation in the area specifically to try weiner schnitzel for the first time. What they say is a schnitzel is just a regular old 1/2 inch pork cutlet that had a seasoned flour coating and fried. Definitely not pounded out. I realize 10:30 am may be a little early for a schnitzel but if it’s on the menu it should be prepared properly, especially since the place is only open till 1 pm. It was a little busy but the waitress said it wasn’t too bad. So beware if you want a schnitzel at 10:30 am. Definitely more than a little disappointed.
