If you want to experience the heart and soul of Ithaca, Chani Restaurant is an absolute must.
Opened back in the 1800s, it has been lovingly run by the same family for generations, with recipes passed down and perfected over time.
Every dish feels like a piece of history, prepared with locally grown ingredients that capture the pure flavors of the island.
The food is outstanding — fresh, authentic, and deeply satisfying. I highly recommend the Kleftico lamb, a house specialty that melts in your mouth and showcases the traditional cooking style that has made this place legendary.
Beyond the incredible cuisine, the service is warm, attentive, and genuine, making you feel like part of the family.
The atmosphere is just as special: the restaurant sits in a truly unique spot, the only place in Ithaca where you can see both seas of the island at once.
Add to that the most breathtaking sunset on the island, and you have the perfect setting for an evening you’ll never forget.

Awesome restaurant, on a location with amazing view towards the Ionian Sea. Amazing selection of homemade pies and cheeses, traditional dishes and locally sourced meats. We really enjoyed the “kleftiko” lamb and spinach-fennel-mizithra pie. Friendly and helpful staff.

Food and the view were nice however they took advantage of us being tourists. I went there with my husband and two kids under 10 (this was back in July), we ordered a few dishes as we wanted to try the food so we were ordering more than we needed. I ordered one pasta for the kids which I asked them to simplify and remove the mushrooms so it was only cream and chicken. They gladly did it, didn’t tell me that that was a hussle in any way. When they brought the food out they brought me two when I ordered one only. I was surprised as that was too much food for them and they said they reduced the quantity and also went into the trouble of changing the recipe for us so I told them that’s ok thinking they surely won’t change me full price X2 for it. At the end I also bought a small jar of something like a jam (as the owner was raving about how good her homemade jam was -she wasn’t wrong it was nice). I didn’t think to ask the price because surely for the size it couldn’t be more than 8 euros. I made the mistake of going up to pay because they were being so slow to bring the bill (a common thing in Greece, once you are done they forget about you) and I was in shock when they told me the price and instead of asking to see the bill I just paid. Afterwards I saw the absurd amount for the jam which was 15 euros for a very small jar and they had charged full price for the kids meals at 16 euros each even though they said they reduced the quantity and simplified the ingredients. We are from Australia and unfortunately our currency is not doing great against the euro so this was a very expensive meal which ruined the experience of the lovely views and otherwise decent food. It wasn’t the price so much that annoyed me but the fact that they saw us as tourists (even though I’m Greek and speak the language but live overseas) and as an opportunity to take advantage of us. A shame because we have had great hospitality in other places but if you go here, make sure you check the bill of what they are changing you and don’t let them take advantage of you. We are not all “rich” tourists just because we can afford to come overseas with our kids.

Stunning location and views but mixed outcomes with the food.
The Greek salad was absolutely huge and delicious – a great start ! Then we had 3 different main meals. Chicken tserepa which was ultimately a bit bland really. Fried calamari which was a big disappointment – only a few pieces were cooked well – the rest were rubbery and unpleasant in flavour (we all tried some to confirm it and we’ve had this dish on every Greek island we’ve visited!) Also the chips were floppy and a little undercooked. The redeeming dish was the chicken souvlaki which was delicious and this time the chips were outstanding – beautifully crunchy on the outside and wonderfully fluffy on the inside – second only to some French fries I had as a boy from a canal-side cafe when fishing in France with my exchange friend .
How frustrating then to have both excellent and poor chips served up in the same meal . The staff were very friendly and overall we we feel that given the high points of the meal we just got unlucky in ordering two things that didn’t quite match them that evening.

Went there up by e-bike in the afternoon and stop for a drink. View is spectacular. Service was super and the owner was super kind and gave us some home made food to have with the beer! We also bought some home made olive oil!
