Typical bar experience. The restaurant was clean and well kept. Food was okay, limited menu, and from what I could tell everything was cooked by the bartender at the bar. The bartender was awesome! She made drinks, cooked and waited on tables without any complaints!

In today’s ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club adventure we set off to explore a restaurant that we found on TripAdvisor. The Causeway Chalet Bar n’ Grill is a perfect example of why we have the ROMEO Club, that is, to find hidden gems that are a little obscure but deserve more attention.
As we pulled up we were discussing decor in different restaurants. I said, based on the name, that this place would have pictures of fish on the walls. I was right. The causeway in Helena is a popular fishing spot and this bar and grill is a fishermen’s hangout. Customers in cowboy hats checked us out as we casually sauntered in.
In addition to the fish-themed decor our table was surrounded by gaming machines and sports channel TVs. The volume on the TV was low enough that it didn’t bother us.
The solo worker behind the counter cheerfully greeted us and asked for our drink order right away.
Half pound burgers are sold for a mere $14, but additional ingredients cost extra. For example, adding cheese will cost you a buck, $2 for bacon and $5 for a second patty. Seems a little high, but the burgers come with onions and pickles and a healthy side of fries.
We both added bacon and pepper jack cheese while I also selected jalapeños for an additional dollar.
I asked if they had coffee and was politely advised that they didn’t have any. “Well,” she offered, “we do have a Keurig over in the corner, but I don’t think anyone ever uses it.” I ordered a Pepsi. Otto was good and stuck with water.
The lightly coated fries arrived first and were served piping hot and deliciously seasoned.
The bacon on my burger was neatly arranged into a square pattern on top and was perfectly cooked, crispy and not chewy.
We both dug into our burgers with great enthusiasm. The patties were well cooked and seasoned. The burgers were so good that at one point Otto paused to remark, “An A isn’t good enough.” (Otto uses letter grades in his rating system.)
On our way out we stopped to chat with the guys at the bar. “Are you guys regular here?” I asked. “No” came the unexpected reply. “We live here.” I get it. It’s a joke. Or maybe he’s the owner who lives downstairs. Anyway, everyone was very good natured and friendly. They advised us, “You really need to come on Friday, for the ribs.” They also recommended another restaurant for us to check out, which we will do in a future ROMEO Club adventure. I asked Otto if he would want to come back and he unhesitatingly replied, “Absolutely!” (Otto likes ribs.) I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find the two of us making the fifteen minute journey north of our East Helena base of operations some Friday night in the near future.

I had the displeasure of encountering a miserable bartender recently. Tall, big girl with blonde hair. What an absolutely miserable encounter. Never have I seen someone so miserable at work. Not just unfriendly and inefficient, but straight up mean and unkind. I witnessed some really ugly behavior including gossipping, eye rolling, and texting. The drink and food was decent, but I won’t be coming back. Yuck.

I have been here 2 other times, if you sit at the bar you arw taken care of. The atmosphere is decent, the other customers are nice. The service is terrible tonight as they are too short-staffed. We had to go to the bar from our table to order a beer and had to go back up to the bar to try to order food. We ordered jalapeno poppers and it took 40 minutes. It is a taco Tuesday dinner special night. They really need more people to work, and the workers need to be more willing to serve their customers. We asked the person bringing out the poppers if we could just order the tacos now. They said that they are only cooking, yet she was serving drinks from the bar as well, she said we need to go to the bar and order from the other girl. I have been in customer service for several years, with a majority managing. Thinking I won’t be back.

Excellent Philly cheese steak sandwich. Must have been a pound of meat on it. Lots of fries served with it too. Server was busy so service was a bit slow but she always came to the table with a bright smile and did check on us a couple of times to ask how we were doing. Would definitely go there again and you should too!

We came specifically for the afternoon concert of David Graham and the Eskimo Brothers. They put on a great show as always and was well worth a detour on our RVtrip back to B.C. Canada. What a nice surprise to find this friendly bar and grill. Great service and amazing food. We both had the brisket sandwich. Glad we found this gem and we will stop again when we head back to Sturgis again next year.
