We visited during new year’s eve; the place was empty and service was quick.

The ambience is ambient, food options excellent and drinks also on point.

We ordered chilly momo, tandoori chicken, coconut chicken curry and Indian breads.

The best dish was hands down the chilly momo, super tasty!
Tandoori chicken was overcooked and rubbery.
Coconut chicken curry was tasty too!
The breads were excellent.

I also ordered an old fashioned, and it was powerfully! One drink and I was buzzed.

Our bill was around 120$ for 4 adults.

I visited Castro with a couple friends yesterday evening after a long day at the museum. With the rainy weather in SF, my friends and I were craving a strong Indian Chai and some yummy dosa. We picked this place after reading the reviews and drove a long way to get here!

The moment we entered, we noticed that the place was dead with very few guests, however we decided to stay and support the business. Sadly our experience was extremely disappointing.

We started with Poppadum & Chutney along with Indian Chai. The poppadum tasted old and oily – clearly they had re-used the oil to fry it and the chutneys were watered down and had no salt. The chai was milky and hardly had any chai in it. We were still hopeful that the dosa would be nice – especially since we got our American friend along to try dosa for the first time. Sadly the dosa was a bigger disappointment. The masala for the dosa was flavorless, cold and had zero salt. The chutneys were terrible and the dosa was cold too.

Overall this was a terrible experience and I am sad we spent all that time and money to go here and offered a bad dosa experience to our friend. I don’t recommend this place at-all and if the Owner is willing to offer a refund, I’ll gladly take it.

Absolutely loved this place! The food at Castro Indian Restaurant & Bar is phenomenal — full of authentic flavors with a creative twist that perfectly balances Indian and modern tastes. Every dish we tried was beautifully presented and bursting with taste.

The ambience is warm, stylish, and lively — a perfect mix of cozy and trendy, making it a great spot for both casual dinners and nights out. The staff were incredibly welcoming, attentive, and made us feel right at home. You can tell they really care about the guest experience.

The vibe is amazing — upbeat but relaxed, with great music and a lovely bar setup. For the quality of food, cocktails, and service, the prices are very reasonable. Definitely one of the best dining experiences in San Francisco. Highly recommend and can’t wait to come back!

As you see in my picture, we finished everything!!!!

Himanshu is a really nice person and very friendly, best experience!!!

Upon visiting Indian Bar in the Castro, the first noticeable thing is the charming ambiance—an inviting setting that makes you feel at home. However, despite the welcoming atmosphere, our experience was marred by a significant delay in service.

We waited for over an hour for our food, a time frame that, frankly, left us expecting a meal that would justify the extended wait. Unfortunately, the food didn’t quite meet those expectations.

The flavors were certainly present, but the dishes lacked the depth and complexity often found in well-prepared Indian cuisine. While not unpleasant, the food felt underwhelming for the amount of time we spent waiting. The spices, though decent, didn’t quite shine as they should, and the textures weren’t as vibrant as we hoped for.

Service, while polite, seemed a bit disorganized, contributing to the longer-than-expected wait time. There was no proactive communication or apology for the delay, which could have helped manage expectations better.

In conclusion, while Indian Bar has the potential to be a cozy and flavorful destination in the Castro, it falls short on consistency and timing. If you’re in the area, it might be worth a visit, but be prepared for a longer wait that may not fully deliver on taste.

Restaurant with good ambience, classy decor and beautiful bold art on the walls. The staff is extremely attentive and friendly. But most importantly the food was fantastic. The Vegetarian Coconut Curry and the Paneer Tiki Masala are AMAZING. We literally licked our plates clean. (No shame!).

Was craving Dosas and found this place in a search on Maps. How did I not know about this place?!? The food was so good and the ambiance is good too. Loved their tasty mocktails too! If you’re looking for non-greasy, great Indian food, this is your place! The people were so nice too. Definitely coming back here. Thanks for taking good care of us.

Came here for dosas, but couldn’t resist trying a whole bunch of dishes! So glad we did 🙂 Loved the lamb vindaloo, naan, biryani, paan ice cream and of course, the dosa! The sambaar was yummy

Recent edit (Jun 22nd) : we go here once a month now 🙂 Love their Daal Ghosht (daal with lamb) and I get it with some cumin rice…yumm! So good. Their food is great quality and not cheap oily crap. Love the service.

I recently visited Castro Indian American restaurant and was thoroughly impressed with the entire experience! Starting with drinks, I tried the Castro Mule, Avani Modi, and ABCD cocktails. While all were equally good, my favorite by far was the Avani Modi—an absolute must-try! The bartender did a fantastic job balancing the flavors in each.

For appetizers, I went with their bestseller podi idli, which was simply perfect—light, flavorful, and beautifully plated. I also tried the chicken tandoori, and it was cooked just right, with great spices that didn’t overpower the taste.

Moving on to the main course, I had what I can confidently call the best butter chicken I’ve ever had. It was rich, creamy, and full of flavor. I also tried the shrimp gravy, which was a little different from the usual, but delicious in its own way, especially when paired with their onion and garlic butter naan. The naan was fresh and fragrant, the perfect accompaniment to the curries.

To finish off the meal, I had the sweet rasmalai dessert, which was the perfect way to round out the evening.

Beyond the food and drinks, the restaurant’s interior is beautiful, and the plating of each dish was artfully done. If you’re looking for a blend of Indian and American flavors with a unique twist, Castro is definitely worth a visit! I’ll be returning soon to explore more of their menu.

I have enjoyed many a delicious meal at this restaurant since it opened. Wow, the food is fantastic! The Naan is fresh. The level of spice is flavorful and a little tongue tingly, but not too much. I enjoy the comfortable seating, and the distance between tables. My group and I were able to have a conversation throughout our meal.
Last, but not least, the staff are attentive and friendly. You should check it out!

I honestly regret going to Castro Indian Restaurant and Bar. We went around 10 PM since the place said it was open until 12 AM, but it was a complete disaster from start to finish. We ordered podi idli, masala dosa, kothu parotta, veg biryani, and paneer biryani. They served everything except the paneer biryani, and every single thing that came to our table had an issue.
The podi idli was deep fried in what clearly tasted like reused, stale oil. It had a terrible smell and aftertaste. The masala dosa was below average, the sambar was fine, but the masala filling was spoiled and sour. The kothu parotta was oily and tasted burnt. The veg biryani was the worst of all, it was stale, smelled bad, and even the raita was clearly old and sour.
We also ordered soup for my boyfriend, and it had absolutely no salt or pepper. When we asked for seasoning, the lady working there couldn’t even understand English and kept talking in another language. She was extremely non-chalant and unwelcoming from the moment we entered. She didn’t smile once, ignored us several times, and we had to ask four times just to get hot water.
The food was so bad that I ended up vomiting after reaching my stay. Everything tasted old and unhygienic, as if they were serving leftovers from days ago. There were only two people working, and the place felt completely mismanaged.
To make it worse, the reviews online seem fake. I cannot understand how anyone could genuinely rate this place high after eating what we were served. This restaurant is a health hazard. Please do not waste your time or money here. The food is spoiled, the service is terrible, and they clearly don’t care about customers or hygiene. I will be reporting this place because no one should fall sick after eating out.

As someone who’s tried countless Indian restaurants in major US cities, I have to say Castro Indian is definitely among the best.

The appetizers were fantastic—the Gobi 65 was flavorful, though I preferred the momos. The biryani was delicious and had just the right amount of spice for us. However, the highlight for me was the coconut milk chicken curry, which paired perfectly with some naan.

Overall, I highly recommend this place and can’t wait to return soon!
