We were extremely pleased with our meal at Brookville Restaurant and TapHouse Bar. The atmosphere is like an old hotel from the 1870s. The menu is sort of like a prix fix. The fried chicken is excellent and includes all of the sides. Our server was extremely friendly and attentive. The old hotel rooms on the second floor are really fun to explore and the TapHouse bar is worth another five stars. Really fun and great food.

We came here on a Thursday evening at 5. We were the only table in the restaurant. Kind of awkward…
The fried chicken was cooked perfectly but lacked flavor. The mashed potatoes weren’t very hot but the gravy was good and made up for it. The creamed corn was fantastic! Wish we got more. Ice cream was just okay. Our server was very nice.
I just thought it would be busier based on previous reviews and the chicken is advertised as pan fried and it is not. It was just okay for the price.

We went during an off time and ate in the Taphouse. The service was friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere was great. The decor was unique and reflected the history of the area. The food was OK. My husband got the fried chicken that they are famous for but said it was disappointing since he had heard so much about it and it was, in his words, not anything special. I got the chicken tenders and they were just typical restaurant chicken tenders, again, nothing special. I’d say it’s worth a stop for the experience, if nothing else. I also can’t speak for the Brookville restaurant side of the business as we did not eat there and it is a different dining experience.

The fried chicken was a bit overrated since it could use some more seasoning, the breast was a little bit dry. At least the breading was well-seasoned. The sides especially the fruits were overrated to since the pears had a slight mealy texture to it. On the bright side, the mashed potatoes and creamed corn were delicious along with the rolls. The cole slaw was a little too sweet. The ice cream however was not very creamy since there were some ice chunks in it. The dining room was well-decorated with late 19th-century era furnishings and decorations. The experience was good since I’ve came in with an empty stomach, left with my stomach full at the end of the meal including ice cream, and the staff were friendly.

Many people from out of town, including us, visit this place. Today, March 7, we drove from 60 miles away to visit. Before coming, we checked Google Maps, their website, and even called to confirm they’d be open. All three agreed. The recording on their phone line also gave regular hours.

We got there to discover they’ve been temporarily closed for more than a week. I don’t know why they didn’t post a notice on their website, or update Google Maps to show temporarily closed like other restaurants do. Or even update the recording on their phone line. Pretty poor communication.

Not what it used to be. Glad I have the recipe cards for the AMAZING corn and coleslaw they used to serve. Both bowls of corn were cold, coleslaw is a different recipe than the original. Pickles were still good. Chicken was good. But so sad that those sides aren’t like they used to be. Google the original recipes that you could buy on postcards. I’ve used them for 40 years at least and they are amazing!

The chicken and sides were good except the Cole slaw. My husband had a steak and it was terrible. Lots of fat and gristle. The older lady at the cash register is very very rude. She was being rude to a couple as we came in and then was rude to us as we checked out. Big signs on the check out counter that says “prefer cash”. When we came in, there was a gentleman there trying to pay for a group of people and he wanted her to separate the check and she told him no and and that he had to pay for it all and then go get the money himself from everyone else at his table. When we made our reservations online, it’s simply asked if we wanted chicken or steak didn’t give us an option of what type of steak so when we checked out she was like what kind of steak did you have? My husband told her he don’t Know they didn’t give him a choice and she rudely said you ate a steak and you don’t know what kind it was? Are going to because you enjoyed the hotel years ago don’t waste your time. You will be disappointed

I give this 5 stars because the entire experience was wonderful! We were seated and asked what meat we’d like to have and our drinks We ordered the beef and the chicken. It was all delicious and big portions! Our server had several tables but she kept our drinks full, was friendly and let us know the status of our food. The hotel and restaurant were very clean and beautiful. You can tell the food was homemade and quality made. And the ice cream was a special added touch.

Surprise ending !
The meal and service were very good. However, they neglected to tell us drinks were extra, so I added soda.
Then after a nice meal was asked if we would like me refills, I said sure but wanted to limit soda so asked if I could switch to coffee. The waitress was very kind and said sure. It was good coffee also.
So here the catch.
There is no Menu. They place a bill that said chicken and emphasized it is served family style.
Had no idea it was going to cost an extra $8+ for for a 8oz soda and a cup of coffee!

If you find yourself eating at the Brookville Hotel you are faced with the choice between chicken or beef as a meal. What I didn’t know before showing up was that the restaurant made a name for itself by the fried chicken they served; the most popular period being during World War II when soldiers were crossing the nation one direction or another. I chose beef but perhaps chicken would have been the better option.

The meal feels like something from the 40s but not in a bad way. The meal starts with slaw, cottage cheese, caned peaches and pears, and sliced pickles. The main course follows flanked by corn, biscuits, mashed potatoes and gravy. It’s a lot of food and is ultimately followed by ice cream which I didn’t eat because I was too full.

The staff was attentive and friendly and even accommodated us when we showed up earlier than planned.

The food was decent enough but with some context it would have been better. You don’t know what you are in for. It’s it a wild west meal or a 1940s home-cooked meal served to people who are traveling away from their homes? The latter would be a great option. It would help forgive any of the small mistakes in the food or service buy helping the consumer know that, while the meal isn’t perfect, it’s cooked by people who are doing their best for the travelers who stopped by.

I definitely recommend trying this place if you are ever in Abilene.
