I have been traveling for three months. I have eaten at this particular restaurant many times over the past three years and been very pleased with the service, food and atmosphere. On this Monday though, it was a place to avoid.
In 100 consecutive days of dining out, all up and down the Mid-west and East Coast, this dinner dining experience was the worst of all.
I ordered a salad, a soup, and the special, “meatloaf”. Before I took a bite of salad, the soup came. Before I took 2 bites of soup, the main came.
They get a n A+ for speed, and an F- for service. The kitchen area was a buzz with friendly banter among the staff. I got the feeling they would all rather be home or out visiting with each other rather than working. I understand that. When I feel that way, I close and go home and don’t subject my customers to a preoccupied an inattentive staff.
I never took a bite of the salad. I ate the cup of soup, which was good. The dinner was cold. I set the mashed potatoes aside after a taste. I really hoped they would be edible, even though I did not have much hope when they were too cold to melt butter.
I ate some of the meatloaf which had a good taste, good texture. It was probably a very tasty meatloaf. Cold it was a good meatloaf.
I told the waitress that the potatoes were not hot like she said they were, and instead they were cold, unedible, and she could take them away.
The waitress asked if I wanted anything else instead, and I said no. I figure if you mess it up once, I for sure am not going to send it back to get fixed, especially if I plan to eat it.
No one else came to ask about my meal and those mashed potatoes.
At that pointl I did not trust any of the food. I would rather be hungry than wonder about the food I am eating. I left.
Someone came out of the back after I stood at the cash register for a few minutes, so that I could pay for this experience. The person asked, “How was everything?”. I said,” it was the worst dining experience. The food was cold”. They brought it all at once”.
The cash register lady said, “Oh sorry to hear that (not “sorry we did that”). When that happens, you can always take it back and have them put it under a light.”
I said,” I am not going to do that, of course. What the staff should have done is brought out the food in a reasonable time sequence, not all at once.”
When I am at a place paying for dinner, I am paying for someone else to make it and serve it. If I have to be involved in the serving process, then…. you know, why am I here? I could be eating at home.
I paid my bill, and they happily accepted.
Not an experience I would like to suffer again, which is a shame.
My husband and I went to Oriental to grab some coffee and walk around. We decided to go try some pie while we were there. We only ordered a slice of each pie. There was chocolate, lemon, and coconut. Now, I am not a pie person. I typically do not enjoy the consistency of pie, so this review is mostley not based on that. I did eat a lot of the chocolate pie, because it is basically chocolate pudding in a shell. Mixing the chocolate with the coconut made the consistency a little better. The lemon had a great flavor. It was tart and tangy, but sweet. I would say it was very balanced. However, I do not like the consistency of pie. So, it was all around rough for me.
The place had a buffet and a large menu. It was very much a local, homey place. The staff seemed friendly. It was not super busy when we went, but it was mid-week. There were some locals coming in for lunch, and they seemed like they had frequented the place. I would say it was not a lunch place for me. You would want to go hre hungry and ready to eat.
My BIG concern was the freshness of the pie. We decided to buy one when we went to check out, since my mother-in-law had been going on about buying a pie for dinner. There was a table by the door that had one of each pie on it. I don’t know how many are made daily, or how they are kept in the kitchen. It was around noon when we were there, and it was the beginning of August. It was HOT outside. We purchased a coconut pie, and the server took the pie from the table and gave it to us.
All I kept thinking was how my husband’s mom said she got up early to make these pies. So, in theory, if she finished the pies at 8:00 AM, they have been sitting out for 4 hours. If she finished them at 10:00 AM, they had been sitting out for 2 hours. I don’t know. I would say that the temperature in there would not have been considered “room temperature.” They were also in boxes, rather than air tight containers. I’m not a food expert, but
I just think these pies should be refrigerated.
