We ordered the mussels, the lobster roll, and the crab roll, and everything was delicious. The mussels were honestly the best I have ever had. The mezcal espresso martini was smooth and rich, and the spicy margarita had the right balance of heat and flavor.
The atmosphere was fun, the service was impeccable, and the food and drinks were top tier. I will definitely be back.
The restaurant has been reported to have the best lobster rolls according to Maine’s Down East Magazine. I am going to respectfully disagree that they have the best lobster rolls.
I have dined at this restaurant on at least 3 different occasions. I am not really sure why I keep returning, because I never leave feeling as though I had a great dining experience.
Let’s start off with the good:
The restaurant decor is always nice. During the holidays they even decorate the bottom area with festive decor. They have a. Nice patio too. The service has always been good !
The not so good:
To start I hate coming to this area. Parking is always an issue. While you can find street parking, if you park in a garage you will be paying to park! The main area of concern is that the food is just ok to me. I have tried everything from brunch to the lobster rolls. Nothing has left me wanting it again! The lobster roll is just not the best. I am unable to pinpoint what is missing. It just does not do it for me.
I am a huge fan of seafood. Unfortunately this spot does not come to mind when I think about the best seafood in the city .
And the oysters were top notch as always.
Ascending thence, however, the atmosphere alters perceptibly. The upper room is cast in cooler hues, broader in aspect, and bears a countenance somewhat more commercial, more polished, composed, and faintly impersonal. One cannot help but speculate whether this contrast be deliberate: below deck, convivial familiarity; above, urbane propriety.
We had set our intentions upon the happy hour, yet the traffic of a common weekday in Atlanta proved most uncharitable. Delayed and defeated by the thoroughfares, we arrived too late to partake in those modest indulgences of oyster and ale at favourable tariff. I confess I remain curious as to how such simple fare, a briny oyster and a well-drawn beer, might present itself in this establishment.
The fish and chips merit quite a commendation. Indeed, among the better renditions in Atlanta have I encountered here. The batter, crisp and golden, surrendered with a most satisfying fracture, revealing within fish of tender flake and wholesome steam. It is offered at a rather stout price; yet excellence, it seems, has little inclination toward apology.
A cocktail styled the “Zombie” was also procured a curious and potent draught of tropical persuasion. Beneath its playful airs lurked considerable strength. The lady found it quite agreeable, which alone suffices for its praise.
BeetleCat does not aspire to the rough honesty of a seaside shack. It is instead curated, intentional, and not without theatrical flourish. Yet beneath the refinement lies substance: seafood prepared with care, libations thoughtfully composed and a dual character that, by some artifice, coexists in harmony.
On a future evening, I shall endeavour to outwit the city’s traffic and secure my place below, with oysters and beer before me and my lady, a modest ritual, yet perhaps the truest expression of the house.
Other things to note: the staff was super kind and welcoming, very knowledgable and accommodating for allergies. And they have indoor and outdoors seating.
