We were traveling and this was close to the hotel. So, proximity was a factor. Service was REALLY slow. Waiting to be seated, waiting to order, waiting for product, all of it took a while. Maybe longer. My salad was ok. Not great. But. Pretty good. Leslie had a club sandwich that she couldn’t eat. She asked for no mayo, but it had a lot of something similar. Usually a club is on toast. This was grilled and soggy. Our server was polite and worked hard at figuring out whether or not they had the beverage I wanted. All in all, if I pass again through Dubuque, I’ll eat elsewhere.

Place was a bit busy- hostess didn’t great us as she went by to say be right there… came back to seat us moderately friendly. Specialty drinks were very sweet, soup was warm at best, and sprite tasted moldy- upside waitress was attentive- smash burger was good. Many TV’s to enjoy sports!

My wife and I decided to stop here to grab some food. I walked in and was waiting to be seated or at least greeted but it took a few minutes before someone acknowledged I was standing there. The place was not busy at all. The waitress was friendly and made some good food recommendations. Food was good overall. I just feel that they were penny pinching, basically charging you for every little thing, like different sauce or extras.

A nice American grill complete with various beers from Iowa.
The burgers were good. A bit of flavor and juiciness with a tad of charing. Kids burgers were very large and filling. The french fries were perfectly fried and salted. The best item we had are the wings. Super flavorful barbeque sauce and large portions.
The beer selection is quite large and offer many from Iowa. The offer a flight to try out if unsure about ordering larger sizes like a pint.
I only noticed indoor seating. Music and t.v.’s play in the background. Good location for hangout with friends. The restrooms during our visit my have needed a bit of attention.

Barrel House used to be our favorite restaurant to enjoy in Dubuque, but tonight was enough to never want us to come back. Came to enjoy a dinner with family on a Saturday night at 6:15pm in early November. Walked in and the wait time was 45-minutes (totally acceptable if they were busy, however, they had only half of the tables seated and seemed to be short staffed.). Sat at the bar to wait for our table to only be greeted by a bartender (the only bartender on a Saturday evening) that was extremely intoxicated (either alcohol or illicit substance). After observing the area around the bar and the food that was being served to other tables, we elected to leave the establishment and enjoy our dinner elsewhere. See the attached photo of the bar after we had said something about all the dirty dishes lying around. As someone who has worked in the service industry, this is disappointing to see.

For a Thursday evening in mid-May, it was surprisingly loud and busy; we just managed to get a table. This gave us hope for a successful restaurant visit. Unfortunately, this hope was not fulfilled. The food was a culinary disaster across the board. The fried pickles starter tasted of batter, but not pickles. The Swiss Mushroom Burger was not a visual feast and tasted extremely burnt. The beer selection was okay, but the 15-minute wait for the first drink was not. And to top it all off, the mobile payment terminal didn’t work, neither with debit nor credit card. All in all, we were disappointed.

We stumbled upon Barrel House after a long day of hiking—it was right across from the Julian, and exactly what we needed: something simple, satisfying, and relaxed. It totally hit the spot! We grabbed seats at the bar, enjoyed a few well-made cocktails, and shared a plate of nachos that really hit the mark. The service was great and the vibe was laid-back. If you’re not looking for anything fancy and just want solid bar food done right, this is the place to go.

We were traveling and wanted a really great burger…this was not the place at all…we should of walked out as soon as we walked in…the host was absolutely unfriendly he acted like it was a bother to even seat the 2 of us….took an hour to get our food once we ordered the waitress disappeared…. When we asked another waitress if she knew where ours was she said “oh she’s in the bathroom bloody nose or something”…never got a refill on drinks…the burgers were absolutely disgusting….it just tasted like bacon grease… onion rings and fries were also soggy and greasy….pretty sure our food sat while the waitress was MIA….they weren’t even busy.

Halie always takes great care of us, makes every experience welcoming and fun. She always knows what we want when we walk in so we never have to wait on our drinks. Best burger I’ve ever had here. Highly recommend all around!
