Reviews
Loved the fish and chips at the restaurant! The batter was thin and the fish was fresh. In addition, it came with garden salad and fresh coleslaw. Shout-out to a coleslaw which isn’t drenched to the max with sauce!
The natural oysters were great and delectable. Many options available. Oysters were fresh and comes from the farm just at the bay.
Despite this I ordered 30 fresh oysters and those came with 3 choices of sauces. I also grabbed myself some hard cider, as I couldn’t muster the strength to drink an oyster stout. The thought turned my stomach.
My oysters and cider were great! I ate and drank everything and I was not rushed at all. It was a very low crowd and only one worker who was the nicest when taking care of everybody.
I leisurely checked out items in the store and in the end bought a few things of interest.
I wanted to buy a brown pearl bracelet and again was disappointed that the jewelry didn’t fit me. My only other gripe here was the store didn’t have a nice view to look at while you at.
I hope on a return trip I can book a tour here and reserve a lunch time inside the restaurant upstairs.
First impression of the place and the decor itself was nothing spectacular, but servers were friendly, and the food was good and made us forget about whatever presumptions we may have had.
Fresh oysters (just natural with lemon) is a must have. Fish and chips was very very good (we only could confirm it was very good after having tried fish and chips in several other restaurants subsequently), and we were spoiled to have that as the very first meal after landing in Hobart.
Price was also reasonable, so we highly recommend this place.
Mikayla hosted us with the greatest enthusiasm and hospitality. She gave the best recommendation for the oysters and we love it.
Highly recommended to visit!
We stopped in for the oysters and prawns, and they were unbelievably fresh. You can really taste the difference when it’s straight from the farm. It’s such an easy win for a high-quality seafood fix without having to drive all the way into the city yet.
My tip: Great spot to kill time if you’re early for a flight, or to grab a dozen oysters immediately after picking up your rental car!
We went twice:
First round, we got a dozen regular oysters to go ($17/dozen)—super fresh in the hotel! Took some to Port Arthur too, still okay, though I found them a bit fishy. Mom said they were fine
Second round, we stopped by before heading to the airport and had the Gold oysters fresh in the car park—10/10 freshness! Zero fishy taste, just a clean, slightly sweet flavour with a squeeze of lemon
Honestly, I can’t really tell the taste difference between the regular and Gold oysters, but the Gold ones definitely have prettier shells.
The upstairs restaurant at Barilla Bay offers a simple yet elegant setting, with large windows and stunning views overlooking the water. Prices are reasonable, portions are generous, and the ingredients are fresh. Every dish we tried was cooked just right—flavours well-balanced and textures spot-on. The only downside was that the seafood dishes were a little too salty. Since seafood is naturally salty, there’s really no need to add much extra salt. A lighter touch would have made the flavours shine even more.
We visited with our toddler, who was far too tired to enjoy the outing, which made the meal a bit of a challenge for us. But our waitress absolutely saved the day. She went so far above and beyond to help us keep our little one happy – bringing a colouring book, a whole bucket of colourful pencils, two sets of stickers, a pink plate, a kids cup with a straw, and even extra serviettes when drinks and ice went everywhere.
Her patience, kindness, and genuine care left such a strong impression on us. It made the experience not only easier but honestly heart-warming. We left feeling incredibly grateful for the service and hospitality.
Highly recommend Barilla Bay Oyster Farm for anyone visiting the area – amazing food and staff who truly care. We’ll definitely be back!
