While on a Girls Trip to Detriot, MI, we met a Bellhop at our hotel (Godrey Curio). He referred us to Baker’s Keyboard Lounge for dinner, to enjoy some good Soul Food and music. He called his Aunt, who we now call her “Auntie,” to let her know we were coming.
Baker’s Keboard Lounge did not disappoint! The atmosphere was great. “Auntie” and her staff was very pleasant and welcoming. The food was delish, we had no complaints. The drinks were on point! The music was just right for our liking. We also picked up on some black history of the establishment. Wish we could have stayed for the band, because they were about to “JAM!” If I’m ever in Detroit agsin, I will come back to Baker’s.

Where should I begin…last night we paid $264 for the cover charge of $25 per person 4 double shots of tequila 6 piece wing dinner and a catfish dinner and it wasn’t even catfish didn’t taste anywhere near like catfish!! Wow I’m not even sure if it was tilapia..And the plates they used were chipped. Not an enjoyable night but the singer was good. I should have taken photos of the dirt build up on the ceiling.. I know y’all make enough money to afford to clean- man what the kitchen must look like!

The food was meh! The chicken was not seasoned nor was the Mac N Cheese. The yams had way too much cinnamon as well. However, the ribs were amazing tender and flavorful. The collars green were good too, well seasoned. Potato salad tasted like some really good store bought potato salad which I didn’t mind because it was delicious as well. The entertainment was good as well but the service was slow. We waited about 1.5 hours until we got our food after ordering but there was a large party that ordered just before us. My bill came up $103 with auto gratuity included for me and wife. Thats $103 with no drinks whatsoever just water.

Overall, the evening was enjoyable, thanks to the fantastic staff and the music; funky jazz send-ups of some great classic R&B and Motown hits. The food, however, was not up to standards, and slow to arrive. The fried chicken was unforgiveable, especially for a place serving soul food – it was the dry brown color just shy of turning black, and no seasoning to be tasted. The green beans were mushy. The burger was not a $16 burger. Additionally, the cover charge was added to our tab – so instead of paying $20 each at the door, we paid $24 each at the table because the bill included an automatic gratuity. The staff was super personable and hard-working, so that helped – but overall, there are better places to go for jazz (like Aretha’s). I mainly went for the nostalgia, and now Baker’s is crossed off the list.

I’m sorry but this place is nothing as it use to be. The service was horribly slow as ever. My date received his first then mine came an half hour later smh. My fish was so overcooked. The band arrived an hour late due to the original band canceling. However, the band was good. Overall, we decided we will not be returning

This is really unfortunate considering this restaurant has been around for decades. I am leaving another black owned Soulfood restaurant that has great food but guess what; they don’t have any of the common sides that Black people like such as macaroni and cheese and green beans. I called bakers because I was pretty sure they would have to have it. The person on the phone told me that the kitchen was backed up and when I explained that I didn’t even want an entrée I want just a side The person told me that they didn’t even feel comfortable with me coming there expecting to get those two items either, much less a full meal.
What is going on? Why are we so trifling? Why doesn’t this restaurant have the ability to give me basic things? Are you telling me that they woke up and didn’t know that people would want collard greens at a Soulfood restaurant? Are you telling me they didn’t know that people black or white or orange would want macaroni and cheese? This is wildly unacceptable but we have normalized it and this is the best they have to offer. It’s crazy. No macaroni… no collards… no green beans ?

Me and my daughter went to this lounge on Saturday, January 10, 2026, just to have dinner, drinks and listen to some good music. The ambiance was nice, and the food was decent. However, my cabbage was cold, and I had to ask the waiter to heat it up for me. There is a $20 cover charge per person and we arrived before 7:30PM. To top it off for 2 people the gratuity was $23 and some change. I was upset, because for 3 drinks total and two chicken wing dinners the bill was $149.31 plus there was a $10 charge for parking. When we left the venue at 11:30PM there was no one in the parking lot watching the vehicles, so parking on the street would probably have been just as safe. I like the establishment, and I try to support black owned businesses, but I feel like this lounge has gone down in the recent months. Me and my friend came here in the summer of last year and the experience was totally different. The portion sizes of the side dishes have diminished, and we were not charged a cover charge to enter the establishment nor were we charged gratuity for two people during the summer. I feel like sometimes we try to take advantage of our own people, and that’s how come people stop patronizing certain businesses. I left there feeling upset and I don’t plan to visit any time soon. I suggest that people are made aware of the gratuity fees when they walk in the door, and the cover charge should not start until 8PM if at all. The food should be hot when it is served. I hope that Baker’s Lounge management team do a better job of ensuring that the customers are satisfied.
Respectfully submitted, Sebrina Johnson

The music was ok but the food was a huge disappointment. I ordered the catfish and it was two really small things pieces, not at all like the menu photo I saw that made me choose that meal. My food was cold. My mashed potatoes were cold and so was my Mac and cheese. I had a small drink. Cran and vodka and it was $14.00 and my drink glass was filthy. It was $25.00 to get in and they added that right onto your bill plus they added the gituity. We each had one drink a small meal and it was $127.00. I will not be back. The music was ok but for $127 U.S, I could have had better food and stayed in Canada. It was an experience but 14.00 for a drink? This isnt Las Vegas. They need a new house manager. I hate to see what the kitchen looks like

Baker’s did not disappoint. Me and my family had a blast celebrating my great nephew’s 24th birthday. Ralph, Charles and Ron were great. The positive vibe lasted all night. I will definitely visit Baker’s again soon. Sharon was very friendly and helpful and she introduced me to Bill, the owner who told me about their Monday night Comedy show. Sharon was the one who informed me about Comedy night. I didn’t know about that. Very interested! Can’t wait to go back. Great Food! Great Music . Keep doing what you are doing and Always Be Blessed

I absolutely adore Baker’s Keyboard Lounge and have the upmost respect for the establishment’s historical longevity. However this was my fourth visit in the last four years and for the first time the food was absolutely terrible. I could tap my cornbread muffins on the table they were so hard. Like someone zapped them in the microwave and for 2 whole minutes. My yams weren’t sweet. The green beans and collard greens weren’t seasoned. The catfish nuggets and steak fries were decent ,but the whiting’s batter coat was extremely bland ! The Mac and cheese was dry and my baked potato was burnt at the bottom! I didn’t get the opportunity to speak to anyone before We left . The waitress was so sweet and very busy I didn’t want to irritate her. The atmosphere was a vibe and I didn’t want to mess it up. Hopefully this review reaches management and they address the chef ! My husband spent $125 on two meals that we didn’t enjoy. He is a food connoisseur and I didn’t hear the end of it . Please fix it so I can convince him to bring me back againnnn
