New restaurant replacing Kotsu and the same owner as Honeybird. The interior and exterior gives off that island vibe and the food is there to match.
Ordered the chicken katsu with a side of mac salad and half a pound of OG poke.
Katsu was good, juicy and flavorful and I really enjoyed the katsu sauce. It’s stronger than what you normally get but it’s good.
Mac salad seemed to be missing some ingredient and was sort of bland. Says there’s peas, eggs and potatoes in it, but I saw none. Maybe they puree it?
Poke was good. Fresh fish as described.
I’ll probably swing by and try the other items and see if the sides were a one time snafu. Lots of potential here!
Negatives: OG Poke was spoiled or on it’s way to getting there! Tuna had an off taste, it was slimy, color was gray/dull, and unfortunately, I ended up throwing it away. Mochiko Chicken was overcooked and dry. Also, the customer service needs improvement. I don’t know if they were understaffed when I went this week, but it was terrible.
Don’t think I’ll be back.
**Update: We went back and had kids chicken katsu again, but this time the chicken was not cut evenly. The width of the katsu was uneven, too. Some parts were thin, and others were chunky. This definitely affected the taste and texture. What was more upsetting was that the plastic container that it came in was discolored. I’ve never seen anything like this, so we ended up throwing the food away.
I think I’ve eaten pretty much everything on their menu but my favorite is the miso cod and their salmon poke. The miso cod is so savory and delicious and the poke goes so well with white rice. The musubis are great, too, and their drink selection in the restaurant has drinks you usually wouldn’t expect.
I’m so glad this place opened because we could always use good food around here!
Update: A couple months later and for some reason it’s never been as good as the first time. Almost everything tastes different now and not as good:(
