Reviews
The small restaurant could be delighting diners in Paris or Lyon, but instead it sits at the base of the harbor in Margot. Well appointed decorations with a chicken and contemporary feel are complemented by impeccable service, delicious craft cocktails, and a kitchen producing gorgeous and sumptuous culinary favorites.
The menu is small, with around seven appetizers and the same number of entrées, but everything is amazing. That’s not just hype from the server or owner. Reviews are high and we agree.
We ordered a wonderful French Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley. The restaurant provided a complementary gazpacho-like soup with a brunoise of bacon on top, and was served with a dense bread and butter both made in house.
We chose the Beef Tartare as an appetizer, which was visually stunning and tasted even better. They classic preparation was accented by small dollops of egg on top. Although you could have this for one person the portion was definitely generous enough to share.
For our main course, we went with the Bouillabaisse and the Duck à l’Orange. I didn’t get the names perfect, but the chef impeccably prepared these classic French dishes incorporating in their own interpretations.
The soft earthy flavors of the spices, tomatoes and onions in the Bouillabaisse sauce created a harmonious blend with different pieces of seafood created a savory taste and aromatic dish.
My duck, may have been the best i have ever tasted. I racked my brain and could only come up with one equally great duck over 25 years ago in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.
The temperature of the duck was a medium rare plus. I know some people think that is not a thing, but please go with it. It had a beautiful sear on it, and was perfectly seasoned. The orange sauce mixed with the juices made every bite pop. The dish was served with roasted cauliflower, which was also good with a little of the sauce.
For dessert we did three small samples of their regular offerings, accompanied by espresso with Gran Marnier. An excellent way to end the best meal we have experienced on the island.
The pace of the meal was consistent, but very European. You have the table for the night. Also, if you need something, motion to your waiter. They will not interrupt you in between courses. We love this style of service, but it is different than the hovering of American waitstaff. Finally, they will not present the bill at the end of the night unless you ask for it. You let them know when you are ready to leave, they don’t rush you out.
I would highly suggest you add this place to your itinerary.
What a wonderful and welcoming spot right in the heart of Marigot to have a drink or a meal. The space is fun, fresh and inviting and the staff was attentive and engaging (and they let me practice my French!). The menu was fresh with some delightful options. GET THE OCTOPUS it was simply sublime!
There is a fine wine selection, but my favorite was the cocktail menu. They have some really interesting cocktails… but if you’re feeling adventurous, ask Veronica to choose something for you! She made me a really fun play on a Manhattan that I LOVED.
I even got to meet the owners while I was there!
If you’re visiting SMX, make sure to stop in to Alizé.
