I ordered shakshouka, and this was brought out. It was as awful as it looked. When I mentioned my concerns to the waitress, her response made it seem as if what she had brought me was actually authentic shakshouka.
Am I crazy? Am I being ignorant? Does this look like shakshouka to you? You be the judge.
First of all…a question. How did this place wind up way out in the land of the franchises? Seriously, this place is about as out of place as you can get. Stuck on the end of a nondescript strip mall with some crappy looking Chinese carry-out place next door. The family that runs the place hails from Jerusalem and had opened the restaurant a scant 3-1/2 months before our first visit.
We were there on a Friday night and were the only ones in the place at about 7pm. Cause for concern? Not so much given the fact that we visited during Ramadan and they had a party of 25 coming in to break their fast right as we were leaving.
Two appetizers – baba ganoj and hummus. The wife and I went back and forth between the two dishes, trying to decide which one we liked better. She settled on the hummus and I voted for the baba ganoj. Seriously folks, this is the baba ganoj I’ve been looking for since moving to the area about 4 years ago. Creamy, smoky, slightly tangy and it is impossible to stop at one bite. The hummus was great but the baba ganoj was spectacular. I suspect a healthy amount of the credit goes to the quality of the olive oil they use. There is a small drizzle topping each dish and when you taste it straight you’ll understand how seriously a good Middle Eastern restaurant takes its’ olive oil.
Mixed grill dinner – this is actually where they lost the 5th star. The kefta had a great grilled taste but was a bit overcooked. The mixture was perfect, the flavor was perfect but then the texture suffered from having been left on the grill too long. That said, the skewer of chicken was very good and the skewer of lamb was as impressive as the baba ganoj had been during the appetizer course, Lamb is inherently fatty and needs to be trimmed and cooked properly or it isn’t enjoyable. They got both completely right for us and produced four chunks of perfection. We split the platter and the wife had deposited one of her lamb chunks on my platter before tasting the one she kept. One bite and she quickly reclaimed what would have been my 3rd piece. Dang!
Baklava – made in-house! Most Americans have a picture of baklava in their heads and it is triangular-shaped, dense and sticky concoction that can be hard to cut through with a butter knife. Most Middle Easterners have a bunch of pictures of baklava in their heads and they are all different sizes and shapes. This is a place where the bunch of pictures mentality rules the tray. I’ll go ahead and term what we received “non-standard” baklava and boy oh boy was it delicious! The pastry was light and airy. The nut mixture was chunky and flavorful. The honey component was balanced perfectly. I would have grabbed the entire tray off the counter and made a run for it if I had a get-a-way car reverse-parked and running at the curb.
Without a doubt, the best non-standard baklava I’ve ever been served.
And let’s not forget the lamb chops! Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and loaded with that herbaceous goodness we all crave. Throw in some grilled veggies on the side, and you’ve got a well-rounded, flavorful meal that hits all the right notes.
The service here is top-tier. The staff is friendly, attentive, and really make you feel at home. Plus, they’ll happily guide you through the menu if you’re looking to try something new.
The best part? You get this exotic, top-quality cuisine without emptying your wallet. For what they’re offering, the prices are beyond reasonable. Five stars for the unforgettable quail, the amazing lamb chops, excellent service, and the kind prices. Highly recommend Albadia if you’re in the mood for unique experience!
