Wonderful Venezuelan restaurant on the main square in Urbana. Brightly decorated and very friendly staff. Daily specials, solid menu and some Venezuelan dishes that are absolutely delicious.

There is room inside for about 30 people, three tables outside, and they seem to be able to handle at least a party of ten effectively as long as there are seats. The staff are excellent – they know the dishes, can explain what things are and the food comes out hot from the kitchen.

Went here for Father’s Day and the food was excellent. The Criollo dish I had was perfectly spiced and the fried white corn fritters were a perfect complement to the black beans and spicy eggs.

Three full meals plus beverages for under $45 is a steal these days.

As a fan of Latin food I was pleasantly surprised to see that Urbana had this wonderful little gem. I have been coming to Urbana for 20+ years to visit family and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the experience of the Sancocho.
The soup was rich, hearty, and extremely flavorful. I will most certainly come back and look forward to experiencing the rest of the menu.

A few minutes away from the cavern so we dine in here for the first time. It didn’t disappoint food was so good and service was fast. Prices were fair enough.. It’s not a typical Latin restaurant that comes with chips and salsa. But overall everything is good & tasty!

We heard great things about Abuela’s kitchen and was excited to try it! I took my mom and we enjoyed our time there. Everything came out fresh. My mom really enjoyed the soup. I tried the chicken quesadilla. My mom is hoping to bring her friends!

We found a gem! We’ve been talking about coming here for a while and I’m glad that we did. I had a bowl and an empanada, and my wife had the Chachapa. The flavors were bold, unique, and layered, but not overpowering. I gave the food and the service and 5 star. We’ll be back.

One of the draws for downtown Urbana is the number of unique, independently owned restaurants with great food. Abuela’s is certainly among them. They offer a comfortable atmosphere, great service and a menu with Venezuelan options.
On our last visit I tried the Black Beef. A simple dish made up of (2) slices of tasty beef (albeit, a little tough) served over mashed potatoes, all topped with a flavorful sauce. At $18.50 I thought it was a bit pricey, but you do get a generous amount.
My wife ordered her regular… tacos. (3) tortillas filled with generous portions, she loves this dish and is never disappointed.
Back to price… I find that food at private / independently owned may cost a little more than your big franchises. At these places, your meals are actually cooked and prepared by a chef / cook. There is truth when it comes to dining out, you tend to get what you pay for.

Food was yummy but the staff was weird towards my son (10months old) they kept being a little to handsy for my liking. I would not recommend if you prefer your personal space. Also they messed up one of our plates and gave us the wrong dish. After a lot of back and forth we were able to get it worked out.

This is a great place to grab a bite of Venezuelan lunch. The atmosphere and staff are friendly. The decor and music are uplifting, and it was clean (even the restroom).

I’m open to visiting again for the yuca fries with queso and bacon bits.

Cons: queso served cold from the refrigerator, and both it and the guacamole looked prepackaged and squeezed from a toothpaste tube. Also, the salsa is sugary sweet, and they are very sparing with cheese, so ask for extra if you want to taste cheese.

Price: $44.00 (pre-tip) for one lunch burrito, lunch tostadas, yuca fries and 2 sodas. The lunch didn’t come with chips, rice or beans.
