The food was 5 out of 10 also …
I really don’t recommend this place. The restaurant is nice, indeed. But the service absolutely horrible.
The atmosphere is nice as well.
First I must tell you: you need to order the pizza.
Have you ever had East Coast wood-fired or coal-fired pizza? This pizza is the closest thing to that I’ve ever had on the West Coast. I literally had to ask Jayson if they were hiding a coal-fired oven back there. The pan pizza crust is beyond crispy — we are talking an undercarriage to die for, cheesy crunch you dream about in distant realities. The kind of far-off places you wake up from and think “that can’t exist”… except it does, right here.
This is the best pizza I’ve had on the West Coast. Anyone can have good cheese, quality ingredients, and a solid sauce base — but this crust, my gawd. You need to try this crust.
The beer options are always solid. I personally prefer the Revision over the Atomic IPA. With that said, if you like crisp, clean IPAs with great bouquet and not a lot of complex malt flavor, their Atomic IPA is the best thing to pair with their pizza.
I was blown away by the Able Baker Amber Lager. It was a wild card. They have it listed as an “Amber” on their menu, and most people would assume that means an Amber Ale — it is not. It is an Amber Lager. This is not just a different division, it’s a different sport. They need to list this as an Amber Lager on their menu.
This Amber Lager channels the energy of Yuengling Traditional (only available on the East Coast, best amber lager in the world) and a Sam Adams Boston Lager. This lager’s crisp, clean, easy-to-guzzle profile is a clear sign of decoction mashing. Believe me: if you normally can drink a pint with dinner, you will be able to drink 2.5 pints with this beer. It’s light, smooth, malty, not bloating, and incredibly complex (a byproduct of the decoction mash process).
Now, the most important part of the evening — Jayson, our guide on this journey. He offers incredibly good service and is quick to figure out what your palate is looking for. Just tell him what you want, and he will make it so.
I also want to make a final recommendation:
If you like an Irish coffee, or you are a woman with a more discerning palate but want a bit of a caffeinated boost to your evening, ask for a “Copper Coffee.” The ingredients are:
Butterscotch schnapps
Vodka
Vanilla extract
Irish crème or just crème
Coffee, topped with whipped cream (optional, if you need a naughty dessert to keep the night rolling)
The Copper Coffee is off the menu, but I recommend asking them to make the coffee a little richer when they prepare it. A bold cup with these ingredients is incredible.
Thank you for reading this in its entirety, and I hope I have been a reliable guide.
Cheers!
We made our reservations 3 weeks in advance for Thanksgiving dinner buffet style, for a party of 8 people. We confirmed our reservation a week in advance since we had friends and family coming in from out of town.
We arrived 5 minutes early, my wife approached the podium where a hostess was standing, fiddling with some receipts. It took a minute before this hostess (Paula, who I discovered was actually the restaurant manager that night) looked up and acknowledged my wife. My wife provided our reservation information, and Paula responded OK, let me check on your table. After a few minutes, Paula came back to the podium and proceeded to seat 2 other parties that arrived after us. When she returned to the podium, I asked her if our table was ready yet, as we had now been standing in the lobby for about 15 minutes. She asked for the name again and then said Oh, they are still working on your table. A few minutes later, we were seated at the table seen below. The table was up against 2 walls and had 2 large tree stumps running along the outside of the table. The 3 chairs that were located on the left side of one of the tree stumps would not fit, so our guests could not pull their chairs up to the table. I found Paula and said that this table and seating were unacceptable, as our guests cannot even get their chairs up to the table. I asked if there was a different table, and she responded that you could sit upstairs, but then you would have to take the elevator down each time you wanted to visit the buffet. I declined that offer and asked if she could find 3 chairs that would at least allow our guests to pull their chairs up to the table to eat. She searched around the restaurant and brought back 3 chairs that would now barely fit the space, but at least did allow guests to sit at the table.
Within a few minutes after being seated, Paula returned to our table and said, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we just ran out of Prime Rib15 minutes ago. We were all disappointed, as you can imagine.
The buffet line was very disappointing. The turkey station had one large chunk of white meat turkey breast, no dark meat, no turkey legs, no wings. The sides were mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, yams, gravy, cranberry sauce, etc. The quality of all the side dishes was OK at best.
After our entire group returned to our crowded table and sat to begin eating, the Chef came by our table and apologized for running out of Prime Rib, and offered to cook some Rib Eye steaks for us. Most of us were so disappointed at this point in time, we just wanted to finish our meal and leave, but a few guests did accept the Chef’s offer to have some rib-eye steaks cooked. The steaks arrived in about 10 minutes and were pretty good, although they didn’t replace what we could have enjoyed with some freshly carved medium-rare prime rib.
One of our guests went back to the buffet line early to get a dessert. When she returned, she had a brownie, a piece of red velvet cake, and one piece of pumpkin pie. She said of the 4 desserts displayed, these were the last 3 pieces of each of these desserts, and the only other dessert left was carrot cake.
We had planned to sit around for a while after dinner, talk, and enjoy socializing with each other. However, after what we had just experienced, horrible seating, poor service, bland food, and the bill of almost $800 after tax and 18% gratuity ($69 per person), we all just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible and try to rationalize what was truly THE WORST DINNING EXPERIENCE WE HAVE EVER HAD.
My wife and I have dined at the 1862 restaurant several times and we have found the food to be very good, the ambience to be nice with the view, the servers have always been friendly and accommodating, and we had planned to visit the restaurant again in the future. However, after this horrible experience, we will never return and never dine at the 1862 restaurant again.
