On taste alone this restaurant is pretty good – the tempura shrimp was large and the coating wasn’t too thick. The sukiyaki beef soba was very flavorful – I would say the soup is on the salty side, but overall good. The duck warm soba was also good – especially the duck tsukune was very good. The duck meat wasn’t gamey at all.
Also, they serve you a small shot of dashi before dinner which was pretty tasty.
Aside from the taste, the price is expensive – soba bowls average $25-27, and some are $30/bowl. And the portions aren’t big – you will not feel satisfied after just a bowl of the soba.
Also, not sure why there is a mandatory 20% surcharge on every bill. The service here wasn’t anything memorable. But to be fair, our server that night also had a lot to do – he had to take our order, bring the food, make cocktails for another table, and then also take our payment.
Overall, I feel that their prices and tip policy would hold me off a second visit.
They add 20% tips BEFORE tax on the check.
Protein portions are small, wait times are long, service is apathetic. Really confused why there is hype? To be honest this was mediocre at best. The sake bar next door is really nice tho, got some lovely bottles from there. The bartender is super sweet and knowledgeable.
As for Kamonegi, this is a one and done experience for me. Won’t be coming back, and won’t be suggesting my friends or family to come either.
They also have other traditional Japanese foods, as well as a fairly large drink selection.
The food is pretty tasty, and the service very good. The environment itself is run down, but passable.
Be prepared that they automatically add a 20% gratuity to your bill.
It’s an okay place to try.
Def go for the side dishes, and try to share a noodle, one bowl is definitely too much for one person 🙂 a memorable night!
They gave old looking carrots (browned) and pieces of lettuce on the pickle appetizer. Weird that they gave jalapeño watermelon bites and called that one of their items. Their croquette was too oily and creamy to finish. Eggplant was unpleasant. Soba was nothing special at all, and the duck one was extremely salty even watered down. Had like 2 meatballs but even with that small of quantity I didn’t want to eat them. Best thing was the dessert, that was good.
Would not go again or recommend. Def overhyped. Very expensive for what you get too, everything is greatly overpriced. I like the interior but their menu, offerings & everything seem like smoke and mirrors. Bowls are mainly from crate and barrel and cups from ikea too which wasn’t impressive lol for the price you pay. Also no AC, we were sweating while eating.
