The idli with the sambhar and chutneys were really good. However, the king fish was a massive disappointment. Yes, the portions were generous (they give 2 pieces of fish) but the taste was dismal. I couldn’t taste any special masala or seasoning in the marinade except a lot of chilli powder and turmeric.
For entrees, we had ordered, kothu parotta, pottalam parotha and the goat dum biriyani. I wanted to try their thalappakatti biriyani but it’s only available on weekends. The pottalam parotta tasted okay and the biriyani was decent as well — nothing extraordinary about either item. We decided to end this with jigarthanda and were sorta let down by that too. The jigarthanda was nothing close to being authentic nor did it taste good.
All in all, for all the reviews about this place, my experience was a letdown mostly because the food was just average and not authentic as it claims to be. Also, the prices are really high for everything on the menu but the dishes don’t live up to the rates or taste!
The extensive menu made choosing a delight. Our standout dishes included:
• Dum Goat Biryani (5/5): Perfectly cooked goat and basmati rice with incredible texture and flavor.
• Kozhi 65 (5/5): Tender chicken in a generous portion that could easily be a meal itself.
• 70mm Family Dosa (5/5): A crispy lentil crepe served with flavorful sambhar and chutney.
• Uthiri Onion Pakoda (4/5): A very generous portion of onion fritters; our only note is that we’d prefer them a bit crispier.
With its great prices, no hidden fees, and exceptional food, Chennai Hoppers is a restaurant we highly recommend and can’t wait to visit again.
I thank the management for giving a surprise birthday cake. Quite a class and they played a music with the name of the birthday girl in it. Very cute.
The menu is so long that the chef has to cut corners, with less flavor in some and more in others. It might be a good idea to cut down the range of food offered or have the waiters explain in more detail the diverse menu.
The latter works best perhaps when it is not crowded but still there are still some food items that are not as tasty as they should have been.
Taste is always good and consistent.
Will keep going back.
Ordered chicken biryani and mutton gosht.
Both were rich in flavors and taste.
My whole experience just got better and better as each course I ordered came it out one was as amazing as the next. This is the best meal I’ve had in a very long time, maybe ever!
Thank you to Raj and his team for making my day!
