We will never go back, food is disgusting, if you know what authentic food from Vietnam taste and look like.
The food here is exemplary. I have had the Saigon crepe at least 10 times and it is always the same. The consistency here is better than McDonald’s and that is by making food from scratch. I don’ know for a fact that Ms. Mraz has not been to Vietnam and knows Vietnamese food intimately, I just don’t think she has. My family served classic Cantonese food catering to American taste. This is what was demanded at the time. What we made and ate at home was nothing like we served in the restaurant. I can tell you for a fact that the food served at Pho Le is more like home cooking than commercialized corporate cooking. I am sure that there are people who think that Olive Garden is Italian and P.F.Chang is Chinese. I am not saying these places are not good and that you would not enjoy them, but for me I will always patronize a family owned business anytime over the corporate chains. Trust me. I’m Asian but not Vietnamese and the food here is great. If service is a little slow, be patient. This is a family owned restaurant, not a Danny Meyer operation backed by hundreds of millions of dollars. They do a fine job here. They are always busy and they service you more than adequately. Your satisfaction is pursuant upon your expectations. Don’t have unrealistic expectations and you will have a good meal here. I have spent over $1500.00 for dinner for two and have not enjoyed it any more than eating here. I highly recommend that you give it a try.
We started with an appetizer of three (large!) summer spring rolls, stuffed with shrimp, beef, & veggies & served with a great peanut dipping sauce. My friends all ordered soup entrees, but I went with the hot & spicy beef, which was, indeed, hot & spicy, but in a tasty way, not an inedible one. It came in a thick curry, served with brown rice to soak it all up, & it was really tasty, though I was a little bit uncomfortable with the level of preparedness of the beef, which was not as cooked as I would’ve liked & was still bloody in place. When I ordered, they didn’t ask me how I wanted it cooked, & as it was served thin-cut in a prepared dish, it didn’t occur to me to ask, but if I go back, I’ll ask that it be cooked closer to well-done. Anyway, the food was good, overall, & we all left stuffed.
My real issue with Pho Le was the service. We’d never been there before, & we were a little confused about the protocol at the restaurant, as no host(ess) greeted us & the only host stand seems to be in the back of the place. We walked through the restaurant, asked if we needed to put our name on a list, & gave it to an annoyed-looking waitress who said not more than three words to us (including not giving us a wait time, but the guys in front of us said they’d been told 20 minutes).
The four of us waited for about half an hour, with a party of two ahead of us, & when tables started to clear out, we figured we were getting close. Instead, a woman came up to us & told everyone waiting that they couldn’t seat us at those tables because they were waiting on a party of EIGHTEEN to come in. Still, seven minutes later, they took our party of four & seated us in the area they’d just told us they couldn’t.
It took about 15 minutes for a server to come to our table to take our orders, but once we placed our orders, we figured we were good to go. Au contraire! As we waited for our food to come, an employee approached us & asked if we would mind moving to another table. We picked up our glasses & silverware as if to head to that table, but instead, he & another server just picked up our WHOLE TABLE & moved it to the other side of the room. They didn’t let us move to the other side of the room first, just jumped right on the rearranging, so I got trapped on one side of the room, where, for a solid minute, I was stuck standing in the middle of the restaurant, holding my drinking glass, a fork, & my chair, just staring stupidly & waiting to be able to sit down. Of course, they were moving us so that the party of 18 could be seated where we’d just been. Did I mentioned that this whole restaurant seats about 24 people, total, & is miniature? Don’t take reservations of 10+!
Our food was good, as I said, but the service continued to be so mind-numbingly slow that at one point, we wondered aloud whether we were on restaurant: Impossible or some other bad-service shtick show. It was truly unbelievable.
Summary: I would probably go back to Pho Le for lunch or on a less-busy weeknight, but I would definitely not try again on a Friday night at dinnertime. This was sort of a service nightmare.
