Social Profile:

Mauka Makai, located at The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas, is a culinary experience celebrating the farming and fishing culture of ancient Hawai’i. Ancient Hawaiians drew their sustenance-physical and spiritual- from the land and sea around them. Seafood provided the primary protein in the Hawaiian diet, complementing staples such as taro, sweet potato and breadfruit. This sets the stage for Mauka Makai – toward the mountain, toward the ocean.

Late post from Nov 2024 experience :

Had dinner there since we were staying at Nanea and saw poster that they had prime rib special that evening.

Setting was beautiful and service warm and friendly. Food was pretty good. Some of the vegetables seemed old and therefore chewy. Overall it was an enjoyable meal.

We had the Ahi poke nachos, replacing the shrimp chips with rice – so delicious! And the brussel sprouts were perfectly done. Lovely patio dining. Very nice in every way. Drinks are on the pricy side -as is typical in Maui restaurants.

Cozy atmosphere for dinner, when we sat next to small ponds with colorful fish. The service was kind and attentive and the food was delicious – tender chicken on Belgian waffles, Asian short ribs (big portions of slow cooked meat) and Coconut curry.

I absolutely love my Sundays off. What made it even better was an impromptu text I got asking if I wanted to do brunch with part of my gang. Oh yes, please!

ATMOSPHERE:
Located within the Westin Nanea Ocean Villas, the open-air space is the hotel’s sole restaurant. Every table has a view of either the hotel grounds, pool or ocean. Live music serenaded us throughout our brunch. The vibe was relaxing, cool and laid back.

BRUNCH:
To start off, mimosas were available in four flavors – orange, pineapple, guava and passion-orange-guava (POG). My friend and I had infinite amounts of the guava version which had the perfect sparkling wine to juice ratio and got us very relaxed.

For the buffet, I started off with king crab legs as I wanted to get down and dirty before having breakfast selections. The crab legs were chilled and tasted fresh. They’re not pre-cracked so you have some work to do! Cocktail sauce was available but I ate them plain as they had a perfect amount of salt flavor. I had a couple pieces of tako pokē as well, which were surprisingly good with a firm texture and nice amount of seasoning.

The scrambled eggs were the only disappointment as they were gritty, possibly due to being actual Egg Beaters or mixed with it. The broiled salmon with Hamakua mushrooms was really moist and tasty, covered in a fresh garlic/oyster sauce mixture. Sides of Portuguese sausage, bacon and fingerling potatoes were good.

Other selections available that I didn’t have were locally-grown and organic salads and cheeses, prime rib, breads, fruits and desserts.

TIP:
Unfortunately there was no omelette station and the only reason why this review isn’t five stars.

SERVICE:
Hostess greeting was immediate, professional and friendly.

Servers took excellent care of us. Our mimosas were constantly refilled and we were checked on throughout our experience. And best of all, we never felt rushed out and stayed till closing time at 2pm.

OVERALL:
Chill ambiance, good food and service equals a definite return.

Breakfast for 8 was easy here. Wait was minimal, service was quick and the food was great! The best part was the kids having their own menu that was basic and traditional, nothing over the top that overwhelmed the picky eaters. Views are great and the tables are properly spread apart to avoid bumping into each other and the staff. Prices are relevant to any local breakfast joint but better than your average resort price. You can enjoy mimosas as early as 7am which was a great starter for the day! Room charge was the easiest option for us.

Very good breakfast with a view. We enjoyed the French toast and smoked salmon bowl. The staff was friendly and helpful. Gave us a tip on where to get the best malasadas in Maui.

2 Bloody Mary’s (for dine in but they came in SMALL plastic cups) were $42 (before tip) they came with a small lime wedge and a pepper. This was probably the most disappointing Bloody Mary I have ever had, worse than a dive bar and 3x the cost. This is a super expensive resort and THIS is the quality they have? Incredible, will NOT be going back. Going to try Dukes next door even though we are staying at this hotel.

Excellent breakfast and a great view of the ocean. They have a chef it seems, when Covid hit Hawaii most chef’s left the restaurants and replaced with line cooks. Also excellent service, prices but that Maui

Beautiful dining experience — we were lucky to get a reservation! Our own fault we were late, however they were kind and graceful and still accommodated our dinner party. Leisurely meal pace, which is expected and appreciated on the islands (if you’re in a hurry you should alert up front). Staff was very knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive and checked in frequently. Server Shawn was wonderful. I ordered the Scallop Risotto, which may have won the prize for the best meal of the week on Maui! Others ordered Prawns, and Curry dish… all rave reviews. Great kids options, and our picky eaters definitely approved! Would definitely return, and definitely recommend!
