THE RESTAURANT, housed in one of San Miguel’s most elegantly colonial settings at Sollano 16, opened in February 2008 featuring Chef Donnie Masterton’s world class cuisine. It is located just steps away from the main square of San Miguel de Allende, the prettiest and most restored/written-about Colonial city in all of Mexico. Offering a full bar, it serves lunch and dinner five days a week in a sun-dappled eighteenth century Moroccan courtyard, as well as in their elegant dining salon.
Chic fusion cooking in an 18th-century mansion courtyard & dining room, with regular burger nights.

We were celebrating a birthday and the staff added a special decoration to the dessert that made the birthday girl feel truly appreciated. The Restaurant stands out as one of the best dining spots in the center of San Miguel de Allende for its food, service, and warm atmosphere. Highly recommend.
As a local real estate broker, part of my job is introducing clients and our team to the places that really capture the charm of San Miguel de Allende. In a town where so many restaurants struggle to find and keep good staff, Donnie has built something rare. Many of his team members have been with him since the early days, nearly two decades ago. That kind of loyalty doesn’t happen by accident; it’s a reflection of the culture he’s created. They don’t just work together—they feel like a family. And as a guest, you feel that too.
For me, walking into The Restaurant is this perfect mix of a special night out and the comfort of coming home. It has that Cheers energy: people greet you by name, you feel taken care of, and you somehow know you’re going to leave with a great story from the night. Hosting my team of agents there felt especially meaningful—I got to share with them a place that has been a constant in my life for years and is always on my mental list of “musts” when anyone ask where to go in San Miguel de Allende.
After nearly twenty years, The Restaurant has never once disappointed me. I look forward to many more evenings, celebrations, and spontaneous “let’s just pop in for a drink” moments here.
Hats off to the chef, the host, and the friend behind it all for keeping the spirit of the old San Miguel very much alive. In a San Miguel that’s grown and changed so much that you don’t always run into familiar faces anymore, Donnie’s place still feels like the town I fell in love with—warm, welcoming, and full of people I’m happy to see.
The food was fine, not great just ok. I liked the shaved Brussels sprouts salad, octopus was tough and balancing between being charred and burnt. My ribs were soft but the carrots a little bit too al dente.
I see no reason to come here, not for the food and most definitely not for atmosphere.
2 apps, 1 entree ribeye, and 2 glasses of wine, $120 USD
The atmosphere is incredible with its retro throwback vibe and decor, paying homage to the 80s and 90s era of music with its vinal record clad walls and art-deco boom boxes.
The DJ at this time was playing a jazz fashion mashup, which was perfect for this setting.
Oh, you want to hear about the food? Well, all I can say is that the cuisine is top notch and surpasses all expectations. This dimly light dining experience was definitely a gift from the culinary gods.
Read no further than this review. You will not be disappointed one bit. The flavor and fare are second to none.
Indulge until your hearts content.
I ordered the roasted beet salad which was spectacular. Both beautiful presentation and delicious. The grilled pork chop looked massive & was also beautifully presented but turned out to be 40-50% fat. Trying to cut & eat a pork chop in the dark made for a very unpleasant experience.
Service began very well but ended poorly.
With so many wonderful restaurants to choose from, I’m not sure I would bother to return. If I I were to return, I would consider lunch or a very early dinner & choose a different entree.
Upon entry there are 2 stores carring some unique items and candles.
As you walk into the restaurant its decorated to appear like your in a village cobble flooring, wall of plants, a water fountain and string lights. The restaurant seems a bit small bit explore it. The bar is separate from the dinning room with an DJ and cool decor. DJ plays great music.
Food was absolutely amazing, great taste and full of flavor.
Prices are reasonable and service was on point.
