Amazing atmosphere
Great seating options
Beware: No gluten free bread.
So burgers are off the table, if you’re GF
They have Gluten Free Pasta, and the fish entrees are GF, but if you want a nice burger or sandwich you will be disappointed.
The Bad: We were in the “B” level room, next to the hallway where everyone entered, by the doors held open by the fire extinguisher, and next to the plugged in air fresher. Onion soup was bad. Broth was tasteless as well as the blob of mystery cheese plopped on top of a slice of bread. The ice cream scoop serving of mashed potatoes was cold and the duck cooked with flacid skin (it should be CRISP) and awful, cloyingly sweet orange sauce.
The Ugly: Service. Asked about added sweeteners. She said everything had sugar. We questioned why the gravy (on the short ribs) would have sugar. She seemed to say that it comes in a bag and that no one knows exactly what’s in the bag before they prep it. Hmmm.. we asked if she could ask the chef. Returned with the news that what we wanted had no-sugar. AMAZING. How could gravy come in a bag?
After that, we naturally assumed that most everything arrives at the restaurant prepped and seasoned in a mystery way. We guessed that they “just add water”. Who knows? Also guessed that the chef was at best a cook who may be doubled as the dishwasher.
We attended this restaurant because we were gifted a very generous gift certificate by someone who thought it was a pretty good steakhouse. She was badly misinformed.
P S. We visited on New Year’s Eve but early at 6:00 pm and mostly empty when we arrived.
Nice menu- hearty meals to choose from. Fish is fresh and delicious.
We had the BLT based on a recommendation from someone in a Westchester foodie grouo. We shared it as an appetizer and from the Brioche toast to that tender slab of bacon to the fried green tomatoes to the tangy sauce with what tasted like chow chow bits mixed in, it was delicious.
And the steak and eggs was PERFECTLY cooked. I mean perfectly!!! And my friend had corn beef hash and said it was next-level. She’s never had corned beef hash this good! (It looked fantastic!).
And the service was kind and heartfelt and not overly solicitous— which I love.
Chef Jack stopped by and was kind and asked for not only positive feedback but if we had any other constructive feedback. We offered that the sides from the bar menu and maybe a few other items like the lobster roll would be good in the main menu (it is odd that you can’t order off the bar menu in the dining room, but the bar menu prices are SO low, that I guess they need people to buy alcohol to keep them that way? ♀️ ♀️).
But it’s a 9.7 out of 10 for me. NY has so many places I want to try, it takes a LOT for me to plan to revisit a restaurant…I’ve got firm plans to go Back in around two weeks!
And the charming location is an added bonus.
This is a great find!
