The chiu chow dumpling was hard to eat because the wrapper was so thick and gummy. The “beef” in the beef rice rolls looked and tasted strange – not like beef. It was like some sort of mush that tasted slightly sweet. The stuffed eggplant was way too overdone and super greasy. Actually everything was super greasy, but I guess that’s all Chinese food. Even my favorite dim sum dish of radish cakes didn’t taste that great. It seemed to be missing something. I piled a bunch of chili on top to make up for it.
The restaurant is huge with tons of different areas for seating. Some are better than others, but it depends on how busy they are. There was a dead bug like a flea or mosquito looking thing on my booth seat the first time I came here, and that was right when it opened at 11am that day.
Water never gets refilled unless you ask. I had multiple issues with the tablet used for ordering. I could scroll and add items, but then I couldn’t remove them or press the “call waitstaff” option. Others tried and had the same thing happen.
I had more dishes but what stood out was the service, efficiency, and cleanliness of the restaurant. The turns were smooth, the ordering tablet and server checking out made it easy to enjoy a meal and not have to flag someone down or feel rushed to leave.
This restaurant is miles ahead of the what I call the dysfunctional dim sum cart experience. There is no pressure nor upselling.
5 stars.
Food was fine. Some dishes came out lukewarm. We like our dim sum; and any food for that matter, very hot. None of it seemed very hot. As much hype as we heard about this place, it didn’t really meet our expectations. We got sui mai, shrimp balls, tripe, sticky rice, this truffle Xiao Long Bao, meat ball, eggplant/shrimp dish. All were just okay and nothing spectacular. For the wait and hype; probably not worth it. But we’ll probably come back later after, hopefully, they work out their service issues.
Why did I rate it four stars instead of five? I may be a bit nitpicking but this type of Cantonese dim sum (or “yum cha”) culture is meant to offer a variety of refined snack foods prepared using different cooking methods, creating a grand selection of flavors and textures. Basic variety was there for the most part but some of the dumplings were too humongous to be enticing, and took away the intended refinement nature of the dim sum experience. That said, you do get more bang for your buck.
Food and prices:
As far as food, what we ordered and tried were all good. No complaints on food. Portuguese egg tart is good, so is their matcha custard bun. Portion sizes was reasonable. We enjoyed the rice roll with chicken feet and ribs the most and kids liked them as well.
Service:
People are nice. They brought out things we need and the tea pretty quick. I like their ordering system if it actually works flawlessly as intended.
Wait time:
When we were there, the wait time was crazy long to get a seat and we know why. We waited over an hour on Sunday noon. When people order from the tablet, there’s some miscommunication and some food items doesn’t get registered and is not brought out. It seems to happen to a lot of table, it happened to the 3 table around me and my table too. So when people sit around waiting for food that doesn’t come, the waiting time gets long and the wait-list for people coming in also gets backed up.
I will still come back since the food is good, but we’ll be more aware of the wait time and come on a weekday to see if it’s any better.
Remember that dim sum is offered only for breakfast/lunch time, and not on dinner.
