Reviews
I knew that I was ready to review this place once I made a more personal connection with the owners (Jerry and Veronica). It became evident that the warmth I felt in the dining area and the atmosphere created here were an extension of the passion and joy that inspired this quaint, high quality, small-town restaurant.
Confession Time: I’m a vegetarian and on top of that, I’m somewhat picky about what I’ll eat these days. I had been ordering items right from the menu and quickly found that the food wasn’t aligned with my personal plan, but I wanted to support this precious place, so I came back two more times and slowed down to study the rest of their menu more carefully, making sure to voice my hesitations out loud in the hopes that staff here would jump in and build a bridge.
I was pleasantly surprised. They not only get it, they’re here to serve the members of the community, even those with dietary restrictions like me. Even their custom beverage offerings have, among the many options, varieties of sweet frozen drinks that are very low or zero carbs.
Instead of the classic, Detroit-style, thick and moist bed used to lay out their blend of pizza toppings, cheese and generous portions of tomato sauce, I needed another option. I just can’t eat that much bread, though it is quite delicious.
Jerry started by directing me to the pizza bowls when I told him I eat cheese and eggs, but other than that I’m vegetarian. No problem! He made me a pizza bowl with only the ingredients I could handle. The result was heavenly. The quality of my meal was immediately apparent. Not all Mozzarella are equal and this cheese was pleasing, gooey and buttery with just the right texture.
Veronica showed me how to create a zero carb frozen drink without compromising on complexity and flavor. Perfect! Guilt free!
While I was eating my meal, Jerry dropped by and I told him, this is really close to being a really good, saucy lasagna delight without the noodles (carbs), for me, a dream come true! All I would need would be four or five dollops of ricotta cheese to finish the flavor.
Suddenly I knew I had found my way home to a kitchen like my own where a little love and a little inspiration can make happen what I thought I would have to do without.
I’m telling you this because I’m not the only one. I know that there are others out there that want to partake in the whole pizza, Italia experience, but they, like me, have certain dietary restrictions.
No problem, come on down! Enjoy home cooked goodness and know that you’re not going to betray your personal culinary discipline.
My food disappeared so fast, that I didn’t get a photo taken of my menu item. I’ll come back and update on my next visit. I was able to collect an images of the more typical meal enjoyed here at Zek’s. (See below)
Thank you to all and I hope to see you down at Zek’s 37! I hope you will love it as much as I did!
Zeks37 – Lafayette, AL
What an incredible find! Zeks37 serves up true Detroit-style pizza that instantly took me back home. I had the deluxe personal pizza for lunch — perfectly crispy edges, rich sauce, and that unmistakable flavor only Detroit-style can deliver.
I had the chance to talk with the owners, fellow Michiganders who recently moved south, and their strong Christian faith and family values shine through in everything they do. As someone born and raised outside Detroit, it honestly felt like sitting down for pizza with my grandpa again.
Can’t say enough about this awesome gem — Lafayette is lucky to have them!
