They have otoro (fatty tuna), my partner hasn’t had that in 3 years since we lived in WA state and they were so excited to have it. There is a large variety of options on the menu, we tried their sushi rolls and were very pleased with the effort and quality put into the rolls. Their fish and veggies are extremely fresh!
The two specialty sushis we got were the spicy tuna crunch roll and golden tuna roll, which were both beautifully presented and had great flavors. We also ordered a grilled squid which was pretty good. The Yotsuba bento box with beef was excellent and came with a large portion of food, with sashimi, dumplings, tempura, and lots of other side dishes. The spicy seafood udon had great flavor and a lot of seafood meat. The duck ramen also was a great size and was very flavorful, with tender meat. The pork tonkotsu was okay.
Also, the whole staff was very kind. Overall, a great place for large portion sizes and delicious Japanese food.
My friend and I came in yesterday and were seated at an itty bitty little table directly under the speaker, which was blaring music so loud that we could barely hear each other. .
We ordered a variety of things. She had never had nigiri before, so I ordered two pieces each of akami, toro, hamachi, and unagi. The unagi was fine, but the other three kinds did not taste fresh. My friend rushed to the bathroom after eating the toro thinking she was going to be sick, and I ended up spitting the hamachi out. The fish slices were also gigantic, and while I understand complaining about more food is unusual, it’s a worrying thing to see when the food you’re eating is served raw (and it’s just hard to eat). Her salmon skin roll also tasted off and we opted not to eat it instead.
We also each ordered noodle soups. She seemed to like her udon, but I was pretty disappointed with the tonkotsu ramen. I’ve never had ramen eggs that were hard-boiled, let alone OVERboiled with yolks that started to turn green. Along with that, the ramen comes with two halves of an egg, and I ordered an extra egg, only to get one extra half (3 total). The tonkotsu broth also wasn’t very flavorful, and the only vegetables were one singular shiitake mushroom and a few pieces of greens. There were two small, thin slices of pork in the ramen– seriously, if I’m paying 17 dollars for a bowl of pork ramen, I expect there to be a decent amount of pork in it.
The takoyaki and gyōza were good.
At some point, our server completely disappeared. My friend and I had eaten the nigiri last, and we both decided that we didn’t have it in us to finish it and were looking to get the roll removed off the bill and to pay. We waited, and waited, and waited, and waited– please note, there were only maybe two other tables currently sat. We both got up to look around for our server at some point and couldn’t find him. I eventually opted to look up the menu online, calculate the total of our bill myself, and left the cash on the table and left.
I wanted to like Yotsuba. I gave it a second chance after not liking it the first time. Sorry to say I will not be back. There is much better Japanese food all over the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area.
